Create temporary containers to pre-pack flight cases, or permanent containers for assets that are semi-permanently housed together.

Serialized containers let you link stock levels together. They’re generally used for pre-packed items in a case or assets that are rented as a complete unit, helping to speed up prepping in the warehouse.

  • Temporary containers are emptied on check-in, making them great for pre-packing flight cases.

  • Permanent containers are booked out and checked-in as a unit, ideal for assets that are semi-permanently housed together.

Not sure if you need a temporary or permanent serialized container? Check out our guide: Differences between temporary and permanent serialized containers

Before you begin

Serialized containers link stock levels together, so first make sure that you’ve created each product that you want to use as a serialized container.

Serialized containers must be serialized stock levels, so be sure to create serialized stock levels against each product, too.

Get started

Head to Resources > Serialized Containers to see a list of your serialized containers.

Scan or type an asset number into the “Asset” field to bring up a container’s contents or start making a container. Serialized containers must be serialized stock levels.

Set container mode

Toggle the “Container mode” to either TEMPORARY or PERMANENT, depending on the kind of container that you’d like to make.

If you usually create temporary containers, save yourself some time by setting your default container mode in System Preferences.

Add components

Make sure the “Scan mode” is set to IN and type or scan the asset number or product barcode that you’d like to include in this container.

Stock types

  • Permanent containers may only contain rental serialized stock levels.

  • Temporary containers may contain rental serialized, bulk, and non-stock stock.

Container nesting

  • Permanent containers may contain other permanent containers, but can’t contain temporary containers.

  • Temporary containers may not contain other containers – neither permanent nor temporary.

Components are listed in the table underneath. Continue adding stock levels until you’re done.

Matched components

Where a product is both an accessory  with the type “component” and has an asset in a permanent container, you’ll see a green “matched component” label in the list.

Matched components behave differently to non-matched components on the opportunity. As product accessories, they’re added to the opportunity order view and Current will automatically allocate to those lines instead of adding new lines on the detail view for them.

Remove components

Set the “Scan mode” to OUT and type or scan the asset number or barcode that you’d like to remove from the container. If something isn’t in the container, Current will let you know.

You may also choose to delete a stock level using the blue arrow to the right of a component in the list.

Empty container

Remove all components from a container by clicking Empty box under Actions.

Review container

Walking the warehouse and want to check what’s in a temporary container? Scan or type the asset number in Resources > Serialized Containers. Current will show you what’s inside the container.

On a product page, Current includes a “container” label next to any assets that are serialized containers in the stock level list.

Where an asset is in a serialized container, you’ll see the container name in the stock level list.

Common questions

Why can’t I add a serialized component?

Check that the component asset you’re struggling to add:

  • isn’t on a future dated opportunity or quarantine

  • is a rental stock level

  • is on an active product

  • is at the same store as the serialized container

  • isn’t already a component of another serialized container

  • doesn’t have a stock transaction that makes it unavailable now or in the future (e.g. it has been written off).

Keep in mind that temporary containers are emptied when completed, so you must finalize check-in against your opportunities to effectively use temporary containers.

Why don’t I see “matched component”?

You’ll see the green “matched component” label when a product is both an accessory with the type “component” and has an asset in a permanent container.

If you don’t see “matched component”, make sure that the accessory is configured with the type “component” – matches aren’t found for accessories or safety items.

Matched components don’t apply to temporary containers.

Can I add bulk stock to my serialized containers?

Temporary containers can include serialized, bulk, and non-stock, but permanent containers can only have serialized stock.

Would you like to see bulk and non-stock included in permanent containers? Let us know using the green help bubble ↘️. We’d be especially keen to hear why it’s important to you and any examples of how you’d use it.
