Adding a Square Reader

  1. Open Square. The following is the square app icon.

  2. Once the app is open, look at the ribbon across the bottom of the screen and select the “More” tab.

  3. Select “Settings”.

  4. Look at the list of categories on the left side of the screen and choose “Hardware”.

  5. Select “Square readers” from the list of options in the Hardware menu.

Contactless Chip Reader

Follow these steps to continue with paring a contactless chip reader (shown below).

  1. Select “Connect a Reader”.

  2. When the “Pair Your Reader” popup appears, physically grab the reader device and look around the edges to find the small button. Press and hold the button for several seconds until four yellow dots appear on the top of the device.

  3. Wait while the chip reader pairs with the iPad.

Once you see the following screen, the contactless chip reader is paired with the iPad and ready to be used for collecting payments.

Magstripe Reader

Continue with pairing a magstripe reader (shown below).

In addition to the contactless chip reader, all technicians are issued a magstripe reader during training. A handful of technicians may also have received the lightning charger adapter as well (shown below).

When using the adapter it is important to know that not all technicians have the exact same model of iPad. Determining which of the following methods to use when connecting a reader to the iPad will depend on the type of iPad the technician is using.

If the lightning charger port (shown below) on the iPad has audio capabilities, then it is ok to use the extension cable.

However if the lightning charger port does not have audio capabilities then the reader will need to be inserted into the headphone jack (shown below).

If not sure which type of iPad is in use, then start by trying the lightning charger port. If the iPad is not compatible with the lightning cable, then nothing will happen when it is plugged in. If this is the case, then remove the lightning extension cable and plug the reader into the headphone jack instead.

  1. Insert the magstripe reader into the appropriate slot.

  2. When the reader is detected by the iPad it will appear in the “My Reader” menu and show the status “Connecting”.

Once the connection process finishes the device status will change to “Ready” and a popup message will appear that says, “Reader Connected Swipe Card to Charge”.

The reader is now connected and ready to use.

Removing a Square Reader

Important Note: Magstripe readers automatically remove themselves from the list of paired readers once they are unplugged. No additional steps are necessary to remove it.

  1. Open Square. The following is the square app icon.

  2. Once the app is open, look at the ribbon across the bottom of the screen and select the “More” tab.

  3. Select “Settings”.

  4. Look at the list of categories on the left side of the screen and choose “Hardware".

  5. Select “Square readers” from the list of options in the Hardware menu.

  6. Select any reader listed in the Card readers menu.

  7. Select “Forget This Reader”.

  8. Once “Forget This Reader” turns red, select it again.

The reader is now removed from the list of paired readers available within the app.
