ESG is about the sustainability of your internal processes. Impact and ESG are both about sustainability, but ESG focuses on managing key themes and risks in your own operations.
- Environmental refers to the impact on the environment, such as CO2 emissions, use of natural resources, waste management and biodiversity.
- Social refers to social aspects in business operations, such as good and safe working conditions, diversity and inclusion and development.
- Governance includes topics such as transparency, ethics, risk management and data privacy & security. ESG governance specifically focuses on how responsibilities in relation to ESG are allocated.
A concrete example of ESG: Company X produces plant-based food products and aims to make a positive impact on the protein transition, climate change and biodiversity. To produce in a sustainable way itself, the company has switched to using green electricity. In addition, a lot of water is consumed in the production process, which is a business risk in the context of increasing water scarcity. A policy and action plan is therefore being developed for this issue.
