1. Grain sample for analysis
The silo manager should use the appropriate equipment (deep bin probes, double-tube sampling spears) to get samples from the areas that are suspicious for quality or insect problems.
2. Grain Turning
Grain turning or recirculation is the movement of grain from one bin to another bin - preferably empty. This may be an emergency measure necessitated by a rapid increase in temperature of say 2°C indicated by the temperature monitoring system.
The essence of grain turning is to discover the cause of temperature rise if any as well as to monitor and visually monitor and ascertain the quality of the grain.
During turning the grain is inspected, samples are drawn for quality assessment, the grain is cleaned, cooled, blended, and fumigated as it moves to the receiving bin.
Grain turning must be undertaken carefully to minimize expenses resulting from damage due to grain breakages and other indirect costs.
3. Check for odors
To check for musty or spoiled grain odor, start the fans for a short period of time and smell the very first air that comes out of the grain.
If musty odors are detected, then aerate the grain (see here)
