Understanding Sleep phases/Sleep score/quality: why do you need microphone access?

Written by Nat

Our BetterSleep Sleep Tracker is microphone-based.

👉 It relies on sleep sound recordings to estimate your sleep stages using a combination of audio data and established sleep science principles. Here's how it works:

Data Collection

Throughout the night, we collect sounds from your device's microphone and your usage patterns. The microphone captures raw sound amplitude.

AI then classifies the sounds it detects.

Sound Classification

We analyze detected sounds (such as snoring) and use them to map sleep stages.

👉 For example, certain snoring patterns may indicate light sleep, deep sleep, or REM sleep.

Ambient Noise Analysis

We detect variations in surrounding noise while filtering out constant sounds such as fans or air conditioners. This allows us to identify events such as, getting out of bed and moving during the night.

Sleep Science Integration

We incorporate common sleep patterns and established sleep science principles to estimate your sleep stages.

👉 While this approach is not as precise as polysomnography (the medical gold standard for sleep analysis), it is based on widely accepted sleep research and scientific models.

Sleep Graph Calculation

All of these weighted factors are combined to generate your sleep graph.

⚠️ Please note: No non-wearable device (without body sensors) can measure sleep stages with absolute accuracy. Even polysomnography, the gold standard, can result in different interpretations among sleep specialists.

Sleep Score and Sleep Quality

Your sleep score is based on several factors:

  • Sleep Regularity: 10%

  • Sleep Debt: 45% → Hours slept compared to your sleep goal or the recommended 7–8 hours

  • Sleep Interruptions: 30% → Noise and disturbances detected by the tracker

  • Deep Sleep: 4.5%

  • REM Sleep: 4.5%

  • Heavy Snoring: 4.5%

👉 Higher scores generally reflect:

  • Consistent bedtimes

  • Adequate sleep duration

  • A peaceful sleep environment

💡 Don't Worry About a Low Score

Rather than focusing solely on the number, pay attention to:

  • How refreshed you feel when you wake up

  • Maintaining good sleep hygiene habits

  • Improving your overall health and well-being

We are continuously working to improve our algorithms and the accuracy of our sleep data. Your feedback is incredibly valuable and helps us make BetterSleep even better.
