Today we’re talking about the most underrated technique out there - Active Listening.
It’s effective because it builds understanding between the sales rep and the customer. By confirming you understand what the customer needs you’re building confidence and trust and have the best chance of matching the customer with the best solution.
Every salesperson can and should practice Active Listening to build real customer relationships that last.
Active Listening
♟️ The move: Actually reflect back what the customer said before responding. "So you're looking for something with a better camera, for your daughter?" "Just to make sure I've got this right — you want to keep your number and add a line?"
👂 What it sounds like: Less like a script, more like someone paying attention. Which — twist — is because it is.
❓ Why it's natural: It's not a technique in the manipulative sense at all. It's just... listening, out loud. But it does two things structurally: it proves the rep was paying attention, and it buys time to actually solve the right problem instead of guessing.
😀 Who it suits: Everyone, honestly. This is the one technique with no bad personality fit. But it especially rescues reps who are naturally quieter or less "salesy" — you don't need charisma to reflect someone's own words back to them.
📊 The number: 3,540 calls contain a clear reflect-back moment. Commit rate: 14.0% vs 9.8% without it. +4.2 points. The tell: these calls run 36.6 turns on average vs 19.7 for calls without it. Active listening calls are almost twice as long — because the rep is actually having a conversation instead of running through a script.
That's the real insight. It's not a faster close. It's a better conversation that happens to close more.
