Creating and Managing Rubric Templates

Learn how to locate your rubrics and rubric templates, create and edit rubric templates, and download rubrics.

Locating your rubrics and rubric templates:

  1. Navigate to the Activities page.

  2. Select ‘More Actions’ at the top right of the page

  3. Select ‘Manage Rubric Templates’

  4. You now have easy access to all of Kritik's rubric templates as well as any that you create yourself through the Rubric Templates page.

  5. Select a template under ‘My Templates’ or ‘Core Templates’ and select ‘Edit’

Create a New Rubric Template

  1. Select ‘Create Template’ under ‘My Templates’

  2. Select ‘Edit’

  3. Name your rubric

  4. Make other edits and select ‘Save as’

How to apply rubrics to already-created activities:

  1. Select the Activities icon on the left navigation menu.

  2. Click into your created activity.

  3. Select ‘Edit Activity’ at the top right of your screen

  4. Scroll down to the Rubric heading.

  5. Select the drop-down menu under ‘Rubric Template’

    1. Here is where you can find pre-made rubrics for your use or if you have created a custom Rubric Template you can find it here

  6. If you wish to edit a rubric, select ‘Edit Rubric

    1. Select ‘Save as’ if you wish to use this rubric template for future use

    2. Select ‘New Template’ or ‘Update Template’

    3. Select ‘Done’

Editing Rubrics in an Already-Created Activity:

  1. Select the Activities icon on the left navigation menu.

  2. Click into your created activity.

  3. Select ‘Edit Activity’ at the top right of your screen

  4. Scroll down to the Rubric heading

  5. Select ‘Edit Rubric’

***NOTE: Rubrics for active activities CANNOT be edited if they have entered/surpassed the Evaluate stage.***

Add/Remove Criteria

  1. Click on the ‘Add Criteria’ button

  2. Select either ‘Add Criteria’ or ‘Remove Criteria’

  3. To remove multiple rows at the same time by checking off multiple boxes.

Add/Remove Levels

  1. Click on ‘Add Level’ or ‘Remove Level’

  2. Clicking on remove level will remove the rightmost level

NOTE: Rubrics must have at least two levels. If a rubric has only two levels it will be based on a pass/fail system, not stars.

Editing Criteria and Specific Cells

  1. Double-click on the cell.

  2. A textbox will appear to make edits

  3. Press enter once finished

NOTE: You can edit the name of the criterion, the name of each level, the descriptions of each level, and the weight of the criterion.

NOTE: If you want to start from scratch, you can clear your rubric by clicking the ‘Clear Rubric’ button under the bottom right corner of the rubric.

Editing Criteria Weight

You can change the weights of certain criteria to distinguish the ones that are more important.

  • The weight of each star would vary depending on the weight of the criterion

    • The weight of the criteria can also be set to 0

NOTE: The total weight of all criteria added together must be greater than 0.

Saving & Applying a Rubric

  1. Select the ‘Save as’ button at the top right.

  2. Select either ‘New Template’ if you would like to save it as a new template or select ‘Update Template’ to save the changes to the existing template.

  3. Enter the name for the rubric if it is a new template, and press save

Pass/Fail Rubrics

A Pass/Fail activity is an activity where a student can either Pass (have 100% at the creation score) or Fail (“Did not meet requirements”, have 0% at the creation score), based on a rule that the instructor chooses when creating the rubric.

NOTE: Pass/Fail is available only with criteria that all have the same amount of levels

How to Create a Pass/Fail Rubric

  1. Select the Activities icon on the left navigation menu.

    1. Fill out the activity details section.

  2. Under the Rubric heading, select ‘Edit Rubric’

  3. Select ‘Pass/Fail’ in the Rubric Grading section. You will see two options here to use as passing functionalities: Rubric criteria or Score percentage.

    1. Using Criteria Level as the pass/fail functionality:

      Select the minimum level and the rule that will be applied to the rubric. NOTE: The level will be one of the criteria levels.

      Here is an example of how a pass/fail rubric with Criteria Level ruling will look for both an instructor and student:

    2. Using Minimum Percentage as the pass/fail functionality:

      Insert the minimum percentage that will be required to pass the activity.

Creation Score

NOTE: Pass/Fail activities work as any activities until the evaluation stage begins.

When a student is evaluated (either by other students or by the instructor), they can either:

  • Pass. Based on the evaluation average or instructor’s grade, the rule that was defined in the rubric is met.

    • The student creation score is 100%, even if the actual average is not 100%

  • Fail. Not meet requirements. The rule that was defined in the rubric is NOT met. The studeent will see what the required threshold was as set by the instructor, and the student creation score is 0%, even if the actual average is not 0%

Downloading a Rubric:

To download a rubric that is attached to an activity, navigate to the activity and select the Rubric dropdown. Here, open the rubric in a new tab by selecting "Full Rubric".

Once your rubric is expanded in a new tab, select "Print" at the top right of your screen. This will allow you to download the rubric as a PDF onto your device.
