Production of Semi-Finished Goods via the Purchase Order Screen

Production of Semi-Finished Goods via the Purchase Order Screen

Updated this week

1. Introduction

In ProdSys, the purchase order screen can be used not only to create purchase orders, but also to create production orders for semi-finished goods.

This provides an efficient way to handle demand for components used in the production of other products.

2. Prerequisites

For this functionality to work, the following conditions must be met:

  • The product must be defined as:

    • Logistics = Yes

  • The product must be part of a Bill of Materials (BOM) for another product

  • There must be a demand (sales order, production order, or stock shortage)

3. How demand is generated

ProdSys automatically calculates demand based on:

  • Sales orders

  • Production orders

  • Inventory levels

  • Reserved quantities

  • Purchased / ordered quantities

This is displayed in the purchase screen through columns such as:

  • Stock

  • Net Available

  • Reserved

  • Ordered

  • Purchase qty (Suggested quantity)

If Net Available is negative, it indicates a need to supply the item.

4. Creating a production order

Step by step

  1. Go to Purchase → Create purchase order

  2. Select:

    • Warehouse

    • Delivery date

  3. Find relevant items in the list

  4. Check the Purchase qty column for suggested demand

  5. Select the desired lines

Important selection

In the Supplier field:

  • The supplier must be your own company

  • Select your own company

This is required for the system to create a production order instead of a purchase order.

5. What happens when the supplier is your own company

When the supplier is set to your own company:

  • The system creates a production order instead of a purchase order

  • The quantity is calculated automatically based on demand

  • The production is linked to the demand from parent products

6. How production is controlled

Production of semi-finished goods is automatically controlled by:

6.1 Demand from parent products

If a semi-finished good is included in a finished product:

  • Production of the finished product generates demand for the semi-finished good

  • ProdSys calculates the required quantity automatically

6.2 Inventory levels

  • Sufficient stock → no production

  • Shortage → production is suggested

6.3 Reservations and orders

  • Already reserved or ordered quantities are deducted from the demand

7. Example

Item: Ommramming (97716)

  • Stock: 1 pcs

  • Net available: -5 pcs

  • Suggested quantity: 5 pcs

If you select your own company as supplier:

→ ProdSys creates a production order of 5 pcs

8. Benefits

  • Automatic demand calculation (MRP)

  • Same interface for purchasing and production

  • Better control of semi-finished goods

  • Reduced manual planning

9. Tips

  • Use filters to show only items with demand

  • Verify delivery dates for correct planning

  • Review suggested quantities before creating orders

10. Summary

By using the purchase screen in ProdSys, you can:

  • Identify demand for semi-finished goods

  • Convert demand into production

  • Ensure correct inventory levels

All of this is automatically controlled based on actual demand in the system.
