Updated over a week ago

Special note for ReSales-Online accounts using Gmail.

(Updated January 2024) In April 2020 Gmail upgraded their security and changed the way they allow SMTP usage.  This will apply to you if you are using Option 3 in your email preferences:

  • sending emails via your own email server from individual accounts and using Gmail as your SMTP host.

Problem
The changes that Gmail have made means that you currently might not be able to send automatic email (profile matches) or manual emails to clients from the system.  If this is the case, you will be receiving an error message like:  error Verify SMTP Username / SMTP Password

Solution
Do the following to solve this issue:

  1. The very first thing you will need to do is ensure that you have 2-step verification enabled on your primary Gmail account. Important: If you don’t do this you will get an invalid password error further below when trying to authenticate your email address. So first go and enable 2-step verification -> https://myaccount.google.com/signinoptions/two-step-verification/enroll-welcome. Follow the steps until your 2-step verification is ON.

  2. Next, you will need to generate an App Password -> https://security.google.com/settings/security/apppasswords. You then use the app password in place of your personal Gmail password in ReSales Online mail settings (username, which is your Gmail address, remains the same).

  3. Click the link above and log into your Gmail account
Add an App Name, for example: "ReSales Online"
    Click "Create".
A popup will appear a password such as "xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx".
This is the password you'll need to use under "Email password (SMTP Password)" in your ReSales Online Email Settings, this is the only way this process will work.

The Email settings to enter on your ReSales Online account are as follows:

  • Host: smtp.gmail.com

  • Email address: Your Email Address here

  • Password: The Google App Password created previously

  • Port: 465

  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS connect security

  • Authentication: Normal Password

If you need help with the above, please speak to your technical person that usually helps you with your email setup.
