When you pay directly at the gas pump, it’s normal to see a charge that’s higher than the final amount. This happens because the gas station places a temporary hold (preauthorization) on part of your balance.
The reason is that, before you pump gas, the final purchase amount isn’t known. To make sure you have enough funds, the gas station holds an estimated amount while you pump.
During this process:
You’ll see a pending or held charge that may be higher than your actual purchase.
Once the gas station sends the final amount, the system updates the charge and releases the difference.
The hold is usually released within up to 48 hours. In some cases, it may take up to 4 days to show.
To avoid this hold, you can pay inside the store at the register and ask to be charged the exact amount you plan to purchase. That way, no preauthorization is placed.
If the hold isn’t released after the timeframe above, contact us so we can help release the authorization and make your balance available again.
