Role names in logical modeling

Relationships between entities are called “roles” in logical modeling. Roles can be modeled as foreign keys in a physical model, and can also be named in a logical model.

Relationship names are metadata objects with no physical equivalent in the target database, and they serve to provide functional context for entities on a diagram.

A role can have a single or a by-directional name for added context.

Creating relationship names

Relationship names can be defined in any view mode by clicking on the relationship line. This applies to physical as well as virtual relationships.

In the Relationship Properties panel on the right, provide the role name in the “Logical Name” text box.

Displaying relationship names

Relationship names can be displayed in any view mode by enabling them in the view mode properties. This applies to physical as well as virtual relationships.

Click anywhere on the empty canvas to bring up the right-hand Diagram Properties panel. Enable the “Relationship Logical Name” checkbox to display relationship names on the diagram.
