Functionality of the Hardware (Plug & Box)

A digital logbook offers an efficient and precise way to automatically record and manage all trips of your vehicle. To fully utilize the features of the Vimcar logbook, specific hardware components are required. This article explains what hardware you need, how it works, and how to use it optimally.

Introduction to Vimcar Hardware

Vimcar offers a comprehensive solution for digitally recording trips, supported by the use of special hardware components. The two main components are the Vimcar OBD2 plug and the Vimcar Box.

The Vimcar Plug: OBD2 Adapter

a. What is the Plug?

The Vimcar plug is an OBD2 (On-Board Diagnostics) adapter that is directly plugged into your vehicle’s OBD port, typically located under the dashboard near the steering wheel.

b. Possible Positions of the Vimcar Plug

Depending on the vehicle model, the OBD port may be located in different spots in your vehicle. Here are some possible locations:

  • Above the center console area

  • Under the dashboard, below the steering column

  • Between the steering column and center console

If the OBD plug does not fit perfectly into the port, we recommend an extension cable, which we send according to the vehicle model.

For detailed information about your specific vehicle model, refer to our compatibility checker on one of our guide pages. For further questions, feel free to contact our Support team.

c. Function of the Vimcar Plug

The plug continuously reads vehicle data from the onboard computer, forming the basis for the trips recorded in the logbook. Automatic data collection eliminates the need for manual location and distance entries.

d. Installation of the Vimcar Plug

  1. Find the OBD Port: Locate the OBD port in your vehicle, usually under the dashboard.

  2. Insert the OBD Adapter: Connect the Vimcar plug to the OBD port.

  3. Secure the OBD2 Adapter: Ensure the plug is firmly seated and not loose.

The Vimcar Box: Data Transmission and Power Supply

a. What is the Vimcar Box?

The Vimcar Box offers a technical alternative to our Vimcar plug and can also be self-installed.

b. Function of the Vimcar Box

The installation is done by simply connecting it to your vehicle’s jump-start device. The device has an adhesive surface that allows you to attach it permanently.

The connection to the jump-start device varies by vehicle model, so please refer to the manufacturer's recommendations (user manual).

Like the OBD2 plug, the unit has its own ID number, which you need to enter when adding your vehicle to your user account. You can use your usual login credentials for this.

c. Installation of the Vimcar Box

  1. Adhesive Attachment: Connect the device to the jump-start device before attaching it in the engine compartment to ensure the cable length is sufficient.

  2. Optimal Placement: To ensure uninterrupted reception, make sure there are no obstacles between the hood and the telematics unit.

Please place the Vimcar Box horizontally in the engine compartment with the Vimcar label facing up to ensure optimal reception.

  3. Protective Glove Included: The included glove protects against dirt and grease but is not a reliable protection against electricity. Please handle with care and consult a professional if in doubt.

  4. Self-Activation: The device does not have its own power switch but activates or deactivates itself depending on vehicle movement.

  5. Safe Installation Location: The expected temperatures in the engine compartment are generally harmless.

Make sure not to expose the Vimcar Box directly to the heat radiation from the engine.

  6. Truck-Compatible: The telematics unit can be connected with a voltage range of 10 to 30 volts. Vimcar’s configurations are tailored for cars, and for truck use, the device needs to be reconfigured.

You can find a video on the exact installation of the Vimcar Box on our installation page.

Advantages of Using the Vimcar Plug or Vimcar Box

a. Automatic Data Collection

Automatic collection of all relevant vehicle data saves you time and prevents errors that can occur with manual data entry.

b. Real-Time Monitoring

With a sufficiently stable mobile signal, it is possible to monitor your trips in real-time and gain immediate insights into your vehicle usage. If not, data can also be visible with a delay of minutes or hours.

c. Legally Compliant Documentation

The automatically collected data complies with legal requirements and is securely stored for auditing purposes. For a tax-recognized logbook, additional details must be entered manually. Vimcar has no influence on the acceptance of this data by an audit.

Best Practices for Using the Vimcar Plug or Vimcar Box

To fully harness the potential of Vimcar hardware, consider the following best practices:

  • Secure Installation: Ensure that the Vimcar OBD2 plug or Vimcar Box is firmly and securely installed to prevent data transmission interruptions.

  • Regular Checks: Regularly check the connection and condition of the hardware to ensure a seamless logbook.

  • Data Management: Use the features of the Vimcar app to efficiently manage and analyze your trip data.

Conclusion

Having the right hardware is crucial for the effective use of the Vimcar digital logbook. With simple installation and user-friendly integration with the Vimcar app, you benefit from efficient vehicle management that saves time and enhances the accuracy of your logbook records.
