Requirements for Course Completion and Certification Exams in AAPC Programs

Understanding the requirements for course completion and certification exams is crucial for planning your certification journey with AAPC. Below, we outline the key details regarding exam eligibility, course completion, and the impact of non-completion on certification pathways.

General Exam Eligibility

  • You are allowed to take certification exams, such as the CPC Certification Exam, without completing all course components. For example, completing chapter exams or training videos is not mandatory but is strongly recommended to ensure adequate preparation.

  • Practice exams or course test scores, such as those from VitalSource, do not affect your final exam score. Your final exam result is independent of these preparatory activities.

Course Completion Requirements

To have your course marked as complete and receive a certificate of completion:

  • You must pass all “Check Your Understanding” quizzes with a score of 70% or higher.

  • Practice Practical Applications (Practice PAs) are optional and do not need to be attempted.

  • Graded Practical Applications (Graded PAs) must be attempted, but a passing score is not required.

Impact of Non-Completion on Certification Pathways

  • If you do not complete your course, you will not earn the associated contact hours (e.g., 80 contact hours). These hours are critical for removing one of the two required years for apprentice status removal.

  • CEUs (Continuing Education Units) are only awarded when CEU-eligible training is completed in full. Partial completion does not earn partial CEUs.

Exam Eligibility Window

  • Your exam eligibility extends for 90 days from the date your course is marked as complete. This window may extend into the following year, depending on your completion date.

Optional vs. Mandatory Preparatory Activities

  • While completing all training videos, unit assessments, and chapter exams is not mandatory for taking certification exams, it is highly recommended. These resources provide valuable preparation and support for your exam.

By understanding these requirements and recommendations, you can better plan your certification journey and maximize your chances of success.
