Exam eBooks vs. Printed Books: What's the Difference?

Written by Andrew McLaughlin

Overview

AAPC certification exams allow candidates to use either eBooks or approved printed coding manuals during their exam. You must select one format for testing. Both formats cannot be used during the same exam.

eBook Option

If you select eBooks:

  • eBooks are built directly into the exam platform.

  • The books are available during your exam.

  • A search feature is available to help locate codes, guidelines, and index entries.

  • The exam uses a standardized version of the books.

  • Personal notes, highlights, and annotations are not included.

Important

The eBooks used during the exam are not your personal eBooks. Exam eBooks are provided through the exam platform to ensure a standardized testing experience.

Printed Book Option

If you select printed books:

  • Bring your approved coding manuals to the exam.

  • Current-year manuals are recommended.

  • Officially published coding manuals from the current year, previous year, or a combination of both may be permitted, depending on exam policies and approved references.
