Do I Have to Renew My Certifications Every Year?

Written by Andrew McLaughlin

Yes. To maintain an active AAPC certification, you must maintain an active AAPC membership and meet all applicable Continuing Education Unit (CEU) requirements.

Membership Renewal

AAPC memberships are renewed annually. Maintaining an active membership is required to keep your certification in good standing.

Membership renewal and CEU requirements operate on separate schedules. Renewing your membership does not automatically satisfy your CEU requirements.

CEU Requirements

Most AAPC certifications require CEUs to be submitted on a biennial (every two years) cycle.

CEUs help demonstrate that certified professionals remain current with coding, billing, auditing, compliance, and healthcare industry updates.

CEUs earned for one reporting period cannot be reused for future reporting periods.
Each CEU cycle requires new qualifying CEUs.

What Happens If I Do Not Renew?

If membership renewal and CEU requirements are not completed on time, your certification may be cancelled after the applicable 90-day grace period.

Once a certification has been cancelled, you may no longer use that credential as an active certification.

Reinstatement

If your certification has been cancelled, reinstatement may be available depending on your eligibility.

Reinstatement requires more than simply paying membership dues. Additional requirements may apply, including:

  • Payment of reinstatement fees

  • Submission of required CEUs

  • Completion of any reinstatement requirements associated with your credential

If a credential is reinstated, a new CEU reporting cycle begins from the reinstatement date.
