Customize the 404 page and find the cause of broken links

Learn how to create and customize a 404 page in your store to help visitors when a web page can no longer be found.

Give the visitor a clear path forward when an address doesn't exist and determine if the underlying link needs to be corrected.

This guide is for store administrators in Go, Plus, and Pro. It distinguishes the text on the store's error page from the reason a specific address returns a 404. The correct store, language, and active theme must be checked, especially in a multi-store system.

1. Check which address is not working

A 404 means the requested content was not found. Copy the entire faulty address and check the spelling, language, domain, and whether the product or page has been moved, hidden, or deleted. Changing the error page text does not create the missing content or repair a broken link.

If the page should exist: correct the content's visibility or the link. If it has been moved: check for a relevant redirect. If it has no replacement, a clear 404 page may be appropriate; do not automatically send all missing addresses to the home page.

2. Open the correct system content

  1. Open Pages in the admin and look for the system content The specified page could not be found or the corresponding 404 page.

  2. In interfaces that still have separate lists, it is found under Pages → System pages. The older My pages/System pages lists may be marked as deprecated; start in the new Pages section and check the page's function.

  3. Open the existing 404 page for the correct store. Select the correct language before changing the text.

Do not create a regular page named “404” and assume it will automatically replace the system's error page. If the correct system page is missing or cannot be selected in the sub-store, customer service should check the actual system connection. A withdrawal/return page or other system page does not have the same function.

3. Write helpful text and save

Briefly explain that the page was not found. Feel free to include a working link to the store's home page and help the visitor use the search or the product menu. Adapt the links to the store's actual domain and language.

Example: “The page you are looking for could not be found. Check the address or use our search and menu to find the right product.” Check the text and links in all languages used and save.

4. Try a truly missing address

Open an address that does not exist in the regular store, in the correct sub-store, and in the correct language. Check that the intended text and links are displayed in the active theme. Also check the mobile view. Opening the editor's preview of the page itself does not prove that it is used for an actual 404 error.

If the wrong text or language is displayed: check the system connection, language version, and active theme. If the entire store is unavailable, it is a separate domain/operational issue. Save the example address and what you saw when you contact customer service.

Quick start

  1. Determine if the content or link should be corrected.

  2. Open the existing 404 system page in the correct store and language.

  3. Write a short help text and working links.

  4. Try a missing address in the regular store.

Subscription

Page content can be managed in Go, Plus, and Pro. Presentation and system connection depend on the active theme and the store's structure; multishop has separate subscription terms.
