Organize the assortment into groups and keep product membership, the menu, and the page's product selection separate.
This guide applies to store administrators in Go, Plus, and Pro. Membership in multiple product groups is included in the current Go, Plus, and Pro plans. Check actual feature availability for older or individual agreements. The group tree and membership are shared data, but menu mode and custom page blocks depend on the active theme/editor. Also, check the correct sub-store and customer selection.
1. Create structure and link products
Open Assortment → Product groups and create a main group.
Create a subgroup with the correct Placement or New subgroup.
Link products under Assortment → Products → Categorization.
Select automatic group selection or explicitly manual selection in the page's block.
Check the menu, the group's URL, and the product list as a visitor.
2. Keep the rules separate
Part | Meaning |
Primary group | Affects URL/breadcrumb context, among other things. It is not the sole price, discount, or access rule. |
Additional membership | Remains if you change the primary group until you change the membership. |
Hide in product menu | Controls navigation. It is not an access control or a guarantee that the direct link cannot be reached. |
Group/product visibility | Check all regular groups and the product, not just the menu link. |
Manual product block | Is not automatically populated just because the product belongs to the group. Change the block's selection or choose automatic linking. |

Store design (Custom look)
Product groups are used to organize your products in a way that is convenient for your customers. They form the basis of your assortment. Defined product groups help you create order in your store. In the admin, you can use folders to create a structure for categorizing your products.
The group tree can be used by the theme, but the menu's actual selection and other visibility rules determine what the visitor sees. Plan the group structure and check the result in the store's active theme.
Tip! A well-formed structure makes navigation easier for your buyers. Easy navigation equals a good user experience and satisfied customers.
For example, this is what it can look like when you gather all brands under a single product group:
How do I add product groups?
Go to Assortment (A) -> Product groups (B) -> Click +New product group (C)
Enter the “Group name” (D) (e.g., Fashion).
Click the +Add (E) to add and save the group.
How do I create subgroups?
Method 1:
Start by creating a new product group. If you are unsure how, see the previous section "How do I add product groups?".
Select which main group the new product group should belong to under "Placement" (A).
Enter a name for your product group (B).
Click +Add (C) to save your product group.
If you click Assortment -> Product groups (D), you will now see that your main group has a subgroup.
Method 2:
On the “Product groups” page, click the product group's name (A). A list will appear on the right.
Select +New subgroup (B) to add a new subgroup.
How do I move groups?
Sometimes you may need to move groups; you can do this in two different ways.
Method 1:
Select the group (A).
In the list on the right, select Cut (B).
Click the group where you want to move the clipped item (C). The list now shows the options Paste into, Paste before and Paste after (D).
Paste into means the clipped item will be placed inside the selected group.
Paste before means the clipped item will be placed before the selected group in the tree.
Paste after means the clipped item will be placed after the selected group in the tree.
Method 2:
Click and drag the folder you want to move (A).
Drop it either on the group where it should be placed (B).
Or between groups to move it within the structure (C).
How do I add products to my product groups?
Go to Assortment -> Products (A).
Create a new product (B), or edit an existing one (C).
Under Categorization (D) you can select a “Product group” for your product (or multiple product groups; this is supported in the current Go, Plus, and Pro).
Preview your store and check that the menu's actual group selection contains the groups you want to display.
Things to remember:
Check the product's group membership when it is missing from an automatic group selection. A hidden product, customer selection, and manual block can also affect the display; group membership alone does not guarantee that it will be displayed on every page.
You can add a product to multiple product groups, but only one can be treated as the primary group for that specific product.
In a multi-store setup, the correct product/group selection for the sub-store needs to be checked separately. Do not assume that changing the primary group alone describes all actual sub-store access.
Group-based discount rules can check the product's regular group memberships, not just the primary group. Check which groups the discount rule actually covers and which products the customer sees.
The image illustrates primary and additional group affiliation, not proof that only the primary group can be included in a discount. Changing the primary group does not remove other memberships.
Other settings and what they do:
Hide
In the product group settings, there is an option to hide both groups and/or products in two different ways.
Hide the product group and its products
Hiding a product group is not a reliable way to stop the sale of every product displayed in it. A product can still be available through another visible regular product group or subgroup. If a specific product should no longer be sold, hide the product itself and check the direct link, search, and purchasability in the relevant sub-stores. Do not show the product group in the product menu only changes the navigation.
Things to remember:
– If you apply the setting to a top-level category, the subgroups are also hidden from the menu.
– The product's visibility depends on the combined rules of its regular groups. If all relevant regular member groups are hidden, the product may be hidden; a visible regular group can keep it visible. Virtual groups are a separate case.
– Products in subgroups can still be available if their own visibility, group, and selection rules allow it. This is no guarantee that the group page can be accessed or found via search. If you want to hide all groups under the top-level one, you must do it for each individual subgroup.
Tip! If you haven't hidden the group but it still doesn't appear in the menu, the next place to check is Appearance (A) -> Themes (B) -> Edit (pencil icon) (C) -> Product group page (D) -> Empty groups (E) . (The product group might be empty). This also applies to the option "Do not show the product group in the product menu".
Do not show the product group in the product menu
Do you want to hide the product group from being displayed in the menu? Then this is your option.
Do not show the product group in the product menu controls navigation, not access or sales stops. The group can still be reached in other ways if other visibility and selection rules allow it; searchability is not guaranteed. The group tree can be used by the theme, but the menu's actual selection determines what is displayed. If a specific product is to be discontinued, hide the product and check the direct link, search, and purchasability in the relevant sub-stores.
Things to consider:
– This option is not active, but the product group is still not available in the website menu?
– This is not included in the menu under Appearance -> Themes -> Edit -> Content -> Header / Menu (Based on the theme).
– If the group is missing from the menu: first check the menu's selection, the group's visibility, and the theme that is actually active. Search indexing and menu content are different things; waiting 24 hours is not a general solution.
Add an image and description to the product group
In this setting, you can add an image and description for the group. It will be displayed at the top of the product group page.
Tip! Choose an image that connects well with your group; this helps your customers navigate more easily.
Store design
Each theme has its own design and predefined layout, but is also extremely customizable according to your preferences. You can start humbly and follow the theme layout, or be creative and go for a custom look.
The storefront design is controlled by the store template: This follows the layout of the active theme selected under Appearance -> Themes.
This is the default setting for the product category.
Custom store design (Custom look)
This is the creative part. Here you can design your own layout for your product group page. The different blocks can be added and rearranged according to your choice.
Advantages of using a custom look:
– Flexible design.
– Control the information displayed.
– Your own relevant content; the layout itself does not promise any ranking.
– Easy selection & placement of products.
Remember:
– Custom look replaces this product group page's standard content layout with the blocks and selections you set. It does not in itself change the product's price, stock, purchase, or access rules. Check each block in the store's active theme.
– Check the heading levels in your actual custom layout.
Product group table
Display the product groups you choose.
Advantages:
– Helps customers easily navigate through products in different groups.
– Add related groups.
– Flexible placement on the page (A).
– Flexible grid (B).
– Simple choice (C).
– Simple sorting (D).
Product list & table
To display the products in a grid, list view, or both in separate blocks.
– Linked - Automatic selection & placement of products under the selected product group.
– Manual - Flexible and custom selection of products and their placement in the block.
– To search or browse for a product to place in the block (A).
– Add a new block in the location (B).
– To affect the product's position. Click the icon and then the desired location (C).
– To remove the product from the block (D).
Full-width product
It will be in a list format like the "product list" block, but with more control and flexibility to choose what information to display about the product on the product group page.
Here is an example of what it can look like in full-width:
Here is an example of what the “Product list” can look like:
Optional text/image
This option provides more comprehensive control for adding content compared to other blocks.
Advantages:
– Add links to images and text.
– Use HTML under source code (<>).
– Add videos and tables.
Remember:
– Custom scripts may not work and can damage the page.
– Check the logical heading structure in your own content.
Tip:
– If you use wide banner images on the product category page, you can use CSS to make them responsive in mobile view.
- Open the HTML view via<>
- Maintain correct dimensions and use responsive CSS if needed, for example:
style="max-width:100%; height:auto; display:block; margin:0 auto;"
4. Troubleshoot a missing group or product
Open the direct link and distinguish an unavailable page from a missing menu link.
Check for hidden products, all common member groups, and subgroups.
Check if the theme hides empty groups and if the menu actually includes the group.
Check automatic linking versus manual selection in custom appearance.
Check the correct sub-store, customer group, and language. Do not change the entire URL structure for a problem with the menu or block selection.
For a wide banner, max-width:100%; height:auto is a common responsive setup. Maintain correct image dimensions/aspect ratio where the component uses them and check the actual mobile page. Check the heading levels in your own content and that the work steps can be followed in the correct order.
Quick start
Create a main group and a subgroup.
Link a product and deliberately choose the primary/extra group.
Select the correct block selection and menu.
Check the direct link, customer/sub-store, and actual display.
Subscription and access
Product groups are available in Go, Plus, and Pro. Membership in multiple product groups is included in the current Go, Plus, and Pro. For older or individual agreements, the store's actual feature access needs to be checked. Do not create product copies or change subscriptions just because a group selection is missing. Custom look and menu instructions must be followed in the correct active theme variant, not mixed between older editors and TPL.
