Understanding Grades and UCAS Points

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Pass, Merit, Distinction: What Your Grades Mean for University Entry

Each unit within the Access to HE Diploma is graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction. These grades contribute to your overall achievement and directly translate into UCAS tariff points.

UCAS points work just like those awarded for A Levels, so universities can easily compare your qualification with other applicants. When you complete the diploma, you apply to university through UCAS in exactly the same way as any other student.

How Access to HE Grades Translate into UCAS Points

Your final set of grades determines how many points you earn, and these points help you meet the entry requirements for your chosen degree.

While some universities and courses ask for certain grades, most Access to HE Diplomas offer enough points to enter a wide range of degree programmes.

Because the grading system is consistent and nationally recognised, universities understand and value the qualification.

Once you have your results, you can confidently apply to any university that accepts Access to HE.
