How to Test Assets Before Submission

Updated over a month ago

Ensuring your assets meet ActionVFX Quality Standards before submission is a crucial step in getting your product approved for the Marketplace. Identifying and resolving mistakes in advance benefits both you and the review team, while also helping you refine your workflow and improve as a contributor.

What do I test?

Before an official ActionVFX product is released, it undergoes multiple testing phases to guarantee optimal performance for all users. To ensure your assets meet these standards, carefully evaluate all the aspects outlined in this guide.

Watch Every Clip

One of the simplest yet most critical steps is playing through each clip or viewing every image included in your submission—whether it's a sample, draft, or final version. Watching your footage in its entirety can reveal hidden issues, helping you address them before submission and streamlining the review process.

Technical Aspects

Check every single file for all technical aspects, including:

📝 File Names – Ensure that all files follow the proper naming conventions.

📏 Resolution – Verify that the resolution is consistent throughout the collection.

📂 File Format – Make sure the files are in the correct format (e.g., ProRes 4444,

EXR, etc.).

🎥 Frame Rate – Double-check that the frame rate is consistent and matches the intended delivery.

💾 File Size – Ensure that file sizes are within the allowed range.

Background & Exposure Testing

To ensure your assets work seamlessly in different environments, test them under various conditions:

🌄 Compositing Test – Composite your assets over different background types (light, dark, and complex textures) to check for unwanted artifacts.

  • Try downloading a free image from Unsplash or Pexels to test your assets with. Here’s an example of testing out one of the clips in the Dirt Blasts Vol. 1 collection:

The background image used to test this Dirt Blast clip was found on Unsplash. You can see that the clip comps well over the bright areas in the grass and sky, as well as in the dark, shaded areas found in the background of the tree line.

🔆 Test the Alpha Channel/Key Quality – Slightly adjust exposure levels to verify that your background remains clean even when color adjustments are added.

  • Here’s an example of raising the exposure to check the background.

You can see that the background has been keyed correctly, meaning the background is clean and free of artifacts. You can also clearly see the areas that are meant to be opaque and semi-transparent.

Render Pass Testing

If your assets include render passes, ensure they function correctly and contribute to a high-quality final composition:

💡 Test Each Render Pass – Verify that each render pass (e.g., lighting, normals, position, shadows, etc.) works as intended.

💡 Naming – Ensure all render passes have descriptive and easy-to-read names that are consistent across all assets.

💡 Rebuild the Beauty Pass – Ensure the light passes can be combined to recreate the beauty image without needing adjustments.

For example, if you have a Key Light, Fill Light, and Rim Light pass, when they are combined using an Add/Plus blending mode they should be an exact match to the beauty image.

This example shows how to shuffle out the light passes and merge them back together. Each shuffle node is a single light pass.

Final Checklist Before Submission

By thoroughly testing your assets before submission, you ensure a smoother review process and improve your chances of a successful listing on the AVFX Marketplace. Before submitting, run through this final checklist:

✔️ Played back every file from start to finish

✔️ Verified all technical specifications (resolution, format, etc.)

✔️ Tested all assets in a comp to ensure they work as intended

✔️ Checked render passes for accuracy and usability

Once you have done this and are confident your assets meet ActionVFX Quality Standards, you are ready to submit the collection for review.
