Saved Payment Methods

Learn how to securely store and manage client credit cards and bank accounts within LawPay Link.

Updated over a month ago

Overview

The Payment Methods tab within a Payer record allows you to securely store client billing information for future use. There is no limit to the number of credit cards or bank accounts you can save.

Stored methods provide two primary benefits:

  • Internal Use: You can quickly charge a client's "card on file" upon their request.

  • Client Autonomy: If the Payer Portal is enabled, clients can select their saved methods to make instant payments.

How to Add or Edit Payment Methods

  1. Navigate to Payers in the left navigation bar.

  2. Locate the desired Payer and click the Pen Icon to edit.

  3. Select the Payment Methods tab.

Method 1: Request from Payer (Recommended)

This is the most secure way to gather information, as it allows the client to enter their own data.

  1. Click the Request from Payer link.

  2. The recipient's email will auto-populate from the payer record.

  3. Optional: Edit the Custom Message if you wish to change the default text for this specific request. (Permanent defaults are managed in Settings).

  4. Click Request.

The Payer's Experience: The client receives a secure link where they can add, remove, or update their methods. For security, full account numbers are encrypted; they can update names, expiration dates, and addresses, but must delete and re-add a method if the account number itself changes.

Method 2: Manual Entry (Add Cards)

  1. Click the Add Method button.

  2. Enter the billing details.

    • Tip: Use the 5-digit zip code to auto-populate City and State.

    • Note: Street address and zip codes are required for the best processing rates.

  3. Security Note: Per PCI Standards, CVV codes (3-digit security codes) cannot be stored. Leaving this blank will not affect your processing rate.

  4. Click Save or Save and Make Primary.

Managing Existing Methods

Editing

For security reasons, full card numbers cannot be viewed or edited. If a card number changes, you must delete the old entry and create a new one.

  1. Locate the card and click the Pen Icon.

  2. Update the cardholder name, expiration date, or billing address.

  3. Click Save.

Removing

  1. Locate the card in the Payment Methods tab.

  2. Click the Red Delete Button.

  3. Click Delete Method to confirm.
