Email setup is crucial for your affiliates to register in the network and activate their accounts. This article contains the error codes you might have when setting up SMTP.

Before you begin

250 error code

“Connection error, check settings. Err=[Expected response code 250 but got code “” , with message “”]”

The default email address (noreply@aff2mail.com) has a limit on the number of emails. If you see the 250 error code when sending a test email, you exceeded the limit. Affise recommends you to always set up your custom email account instead of the default one.

535 error code

“Connection error, check settings. Err=[Expected response code 250 but got code “535” , with message “535-5.7.8 Username and Password not accepted. Learn more at

535 5.7.8 https://support.google.com/mail/?p=BadCredentials w22-v6sm4382727eda.34 - gsmtp

”]

If you see the 535 error code, it means two-step verification is enabled on the email account and/or access to third-party services is not allowed.

To turn two-step verification off and grant access to third-party services in a Gmail account, do the following:

  1. Sign in to your Gmail account and select the Security section:

  2. Turn the two-step verification option off:

  3. Optional. You can also grant access to a specific application. Follow the Gmail guide to proceed.

220 error code

“Connection error, check settings. Err=[Expected response code 220 but got code “” , with message “”]”

If you see the 535 error code, it means the Less secure app access option is turned on in the email account.

To turn this option off in Gmail account, do the following:

  1. Sign in to your Gmail account and select the Security section:

  2. Turn the less secure app access option off:

3. Optional. To get additional information on how to resolve it, follow this link.

⚠️ If Yandex, Mail or any other mail service has the same option in the Settings, you must turn it off on the relevant settings page.

Error of registration

If your affiliate does not receive email notifications or sees the ''Error of registration'' message while signing up, do the following:

1. Go to Settings and make a test email for your email account:

2. Proceed with the steps described in cases of 250/535 error codes.

🔎 If you don't see any error message and the test email is passed successfully, check your spam box.

Failed to authenticate to SMTP server with username

The most secure way to send mails is to use SMTP authentication. But this authentication can sometimes fail with the errors:

Err=[Failed to authenticate on SMTP server with username "example@example.ru
using 3 possible authenticators]

or

Err=[Failed to authenticate on SMTP server with username "example@example.com
using 3 possible authenticators]

This error means the Less secure app access option is turned on in the email account. In the guides below, you can see how to turn this option off.

Disable Less secure app access in a Yandex account

  1. Sign in to your Yandex account and check if there are any messages in your Outbox folder.

  2. In Settings, activate encrypted data transfer via SSL (TLS) by doing the following:

    a. Open your browser and log into your Yandex account.

    b. Go into your Inbox and select the Settings icon.

  3. Click All settings.

  4. Select Email clients.

  5. Enable the following checkboxes, and click Save changes.

Disable Less secure app access in a Gmail account

If you use a Gmail account, you need to enable two-step verification.

🔎 It may impact your use of the account. To get further details, read Two Step Verification.

  1. Sign in to your Gmail account and go to Security > Signing in to Google > 2-Step Verification > Off.

  2. Turn the less secure app access option off.

If two-step verification is not enabled, enable access for less secure apps. For that, sign into the account, and go to Less secure app access. Under Security, scroll down and enable access for less secure apps. This is essential for IMAP, POP and SMTP connections.

🔎 Even if you checked this before, check it now because Gmail disables this access if it is not in use.

⚠️ If you still have a problem, clear Captcha. To do this, go to https://accounts.google.com/DisplayUnlockCaptcha and sign in with the Gmail username and password.
