Nosto is an alternative product recommendation engine utilized by more than 2,500 merchants, which can be integrated with your Automatic Upsells. By powering your post-purchase upsells with Nosto, you can surface highly relevant, personalized product suggestions immediately after checkout to help increase average order value and incremental revenue. Aftersell can connect to your Nosto account and leverage their algorithm for product recommendations.

What Is This Integration?
Nosto is an AI-powered product recommendation platform used by thousands of merchants to deliver personalized product suggestions. When connected to AfterSell, Nosto can power your post-purchase one-click upsells, showing relevant products to customers right after they complete their order.
This integration is designed to leverage real-time shopper behaviour, such as browsing and purchase history, affinities, and context, to deliver tailored upsell offers when purchase intent is at its highest.
Steps to setup the integration
If you're interested, you’ll need to follow the steps below to set up Nosto through Aftersell. We also have a video below that outlines the steps:
Search for Nosto in the Shopify App Store and install the app.
Navigate to the "Settings" section of the Nosto app, then click on "Authentication Tokens."
If you don't see any API tokens, you'll need to reach out to Nosto Support to obtain one before proceeding.
After you obtain the API token, click the blue "Decrypt" button:
This will open a window displaying the API key. Ensure you click "Copy to Clipboard" to copy the API key, and remember to keep it private.
Now that you have the API key, return to Aftersell and navigate to the "Settings" tab on the left side of the app. Then, go to the Automatic Upsells section.
Ensure that "Nosto" is selected as your Product Recommendations app and that you have pasted the API token from earlier into the Nosto API key field:
Save your changes, and Nosto is now connected. Next, we need to set up some Automatic Upsells for it to utilize.
Go to the funnel editor and create an Automatic Upsell.
You can choose to create either a single Automatic Upsell or multiple; there’s no limit to how many you can set up.
If you’re ready to test it out, ensure that the funnel with your Automatic Upsells is active. Once it’s active, place an order on your store that meets the funnel's trigger requirements. This will enable you to check if the product recommendations are functioning correctly.
If you recently installed Nosto, we recommend waiting a few hours to allow its product recommendation algorithm to activate on your store. Otherwise, it may not yet have recommendations for your customers.

What Happens Behind the Scenes
When a customer completes checkout:
Shopify marks the order on hold to allow the post-purchase upsell to load.
Nosto returns personalized recommendations.
Up to four products may be shown (depending on your settings).
If the customer accepts the offer, the item is added to the original order via Shopify without requiring new payment details. If declined or if nothing is returned, the flow continues normally.
Important Restrictions
The AfterSell + Nosto integration only works in the Post-Purchase upsell funnel step and will NOT work in the following places:
Cart drawer or Cart pages
Checkout pages
Thank You page
It is exclusive to the Post-Purchase “One-Click Upsell” funnel step that appears immediately after checkout. Moreover, because this placement is technically between Shopify Checkout and the Thank You page, it takes advantage of peak purchase intent while keeping the experience seamless for the shopper.
Featured Capability: Browsing History Logic
While Nosto supports various recommendation logics, one particularly high-value option for post-purchase upsells is Browsing History. This logic shows customers items they recently viewed before purchasing, acting as a personalized reminder that can boost conversion on upsells. You can select this logic when configuring your post-purchase offer inside AfterSell.
Best Practices
Use browsing history logic to show relevant products customers viewed recently.
Exclude purchased items so you don’t recommend what the customer already bought.
Give the algorithm time to learn — recommendations typically get stronger as Nosto collects more shopper data.
Test with real orders to ensure recommendations display as expected.
