Setting up a Flic button using an Android device

The Airnoise Flic button makes it quick and easy to search for aircraft near you and generate a noise complaint without having to access your phone or computer. It uses Bluetooth technology to communicate with your phone and, in turn, trigger a search on Airnoise. The button needs to be within about 50 feet or so of your phone to work (up to 150' with a Flic Hub), depending on what's between the button and your phone. If you live in a castle made of heavy stone or a lead coffin, you might need to be closer!

NOTE: Have your Flic button handy as you go through these setup instructions -- you'll need it a few steps in.

Also, once you have the app installed on your device, the whole process should only take about two minutes. The process is pretty bomb-proof, and since it's so quick, you might want to read through all of the instructions first if you're the kind of person who wants to know all the details ahead of time. Otherwise, just jump in -- you're gonna do great!

Step-by-step instructions - phone or Hub

1. To setup your button on your phone or a Flic Hub, you first need to install the Flic app on your Android device. Use this link from your device: Flic app on Google Play Store

2. When you first open the app, you'll need to check the "I agree..." box to accept Flic's terms and conditions. Once you do, you'll be able to create your Flic account, or sign in to your existing account if you already have one.

Go ahead and create an account if you need one by tapping the "CREATE ACCOUNT" button -- you can't use Airnoise Flic buttons without an account. You just need to enter your name, email address, and a password.

3. Once your account has been created, the app will ask you to allow it the permissions it needs to work properly. Tap where it says "Tap here to grant permission" and then tap "Allow" in the box that pops up below. You won't be able to add Airnoise buttons to the Flic app without this permission, so be sure you allow it.

Add a button to your Android device

The following set of instructions guides you through adding an Airnoise Flic button to your phone. In this case, in order for your button clicks to get to Airnoise, your phone must be on, running the Flic app (the app can be in the background, i.e., not open on the device), and within range of your button.

If you purchased a hub from Flic and want to use it, click here to jump to the setup instructions for using a hub.

1. From the HUBS / PHONE page, tap the "PHONE" tab as shown below to get started.

2. Click the "Add Flic to Phone" button to pair and add your Airnoise button.

3. Grab your Airnoise Flic button, it's time to connect it! As the screen below says, press and hold the button until you see it connect. You might have to hold if for 10 seconds, but you can do it!

4. When the Flic app and button connect, you'll see the screen below. Tap "Pair" to allow the button to connect to the app.

5. Once the button is fully paired and connected, you will see the "Pairing Complete!" message and the awesome Airnoise button logo, as shown below. Go ahead and tap the "FINISH" button.

6. When you click "FINISH" you should see the button listed on the PHONE tab of the Flic app. At this point, you're ready to use your Airnoise button to report noise, but please read on for additional information.

NOTE: It is normal for the button(s) listed on this page to be grayed-out and listed as "Out of range" if the button and your phone have not been in range of one another for a period of time. This helps the button save energy and greatly extends the battery life.

If you click the button while viewing this page, you'll see the button icon immediately switch to "Connected" and your click will be sent to Airnoise. So have no fear, your button is ready for action as long as it's near your phone, even if it initially says it's out of range. Contact us if you run into any issues getting the button to come back to life in this situation.

7. All Airnoise buttons are initially named "Airnoise," but you can change that if you like by tapping the button icon to see its details, then tapping the gear icon in the top-right corner and selecting "Change name."

NOTE: The serial number of the button is shown on this page, but if you take a close look at the actual button, you won't find the serial number on it anywhere. If you have more than one button, you can use a Sharpie to write the serial number on the paper on the back of the button, but realize this paper is covering a sticky pad that you can use to affix your button to any smooth surface, so it's not permanent.

8. If you want to give your button a quick test without generating a complaint, you can press and hold it for 2-3 seconds (a "long" press), which will simply cause Airnoise to send you an email letting you know your button is working properly. Otherwise, a single, quick click will search for any type of aircraft nearby.

If you are on the PHONE tab in the Flic app when you press your button, you should see the icon "wiggle" a little, and if your phone's volume is turned up, you should hear a short tone when the click is received by the app.

Hub Setup and Adding a Button to your Hub

Follow these instructions if you purchased a Hub from Flic.io and want to use it instead of using your phone to handle button clicks. You will still need your phone to set up the hub initially and add your button to it, but once your button is paired with the hub, you won't need your phone to be nearby or even turned on to use your Airnoise Flic button to report aircraft noise.

1. On the Flic app landing page, as shown below, tap "HUBS" to configure your hub and add your button to it. Tap the "Add Hub" button to start. Be sure your hub is plugged into USB power. You're also going to need the password on the back of the device, which is printed in very small letters, so consider taking a picture of the back of the hub so you can zoom in to read the password.

2. When you tap "Add Hub," the app will look for hubs nearby and should pretty much immediately find your hub. The serial number of the hub will be shown on the screen as soon as it finds it. Tap on the serial number of your hub to continue.

3. The app will then ask for the password, which is printed on the back of the hub. Here's where to find it on a Hub Mini, though yours shouldn't be blurred out!

Be sure to enter it exactly as it's shown -- it's case-sensitive.

4. Once you enter the password correctly and tap "CONNECT," the hub should be added to your phone and you should see the screen below. Tap "Finish" to continue.

5. The hub has to connect to the Internet to send your button clicks to Airnoise, so it has to be either connected to your WiFi or directly to your home network via an RJ45 network cable. If you want to hard-wire it, simply plugging it into your network should connect it.

If you need to connect it to your WiFi, make sure you have your WiFi password handy, and select your network from the list as shown below by tapping on your network's name.

6. Once you enter your WiFi network password correctly, you should see the screen below. Note the "Connected to network" label, showing your hub is now fully configured. Tap "Finish" to move on to adding your button to your hub.

7. The process for adding a button is quite simple. Tap the "Add Flic to Hub" button to start looking for your button.

8. Press and hold your button and the hub should find it in 10 seconds or less.

9. Once your button is paired, you will see the "Pairing Complete!" screen below. Tap "FINISH" to complete the setup.

10. Finally, you'll see your shiny new Airnoise button configured in your hub, ready to go! From this point forward, you won't need your phone to use the button -- just click it and you should be good to go!
