How do I sell an investment?

If you're ready to sell an investment - or part of one - it couldn't be easier to do it via your AJ Bell app.

Simply view the account where the investment you want to sell is, then tap on it. From there you can select 'Deal', and choose the option to 'Sell'. Enter the details of the sale you want to make, including the type of sale (at best, limit or stop loss) and the value or quantity of the investment you want to sell. You'll then be able to generate a quote if your selling shares, or review your order if your selling a fund. Either way, check you're happy with the details you've entered then submit your order.

Like when you buy an investment, for shares you can only place a direct deal during market hours. In the UK these are 8am to 4.30pm. You can view international market hours on the website. If you're selling a fund, you can place this deal at any time, though your deal won’t be executed until the next valuation point (usually around midday on the next business day).

The money from the sale of your investment will be credited to your account straightaway to allow you to buy another investment, should you wish to. However, if you're planning to withdraw the proceeds of your sale, you'll need to wait for the cash to settle fully, which is usually one day after the settlement date on your order contract note.
