My recommendation would be to strongly prioritize for planning or connecting.
What I’ve seen happen is that you want to plan and get alignment, but you may schedule an outing that cuts the conversation short. If it’s for alignment, depending on your team that may involve hashing things out late into the night until you get it right. Personally, I think connecting is much easier after alignment is reached and it’s worth pushing for.
So, if you want a retreat where you sing songs and connect over personal stories, do that specifically and set goals / rules around that. (no present day work talk, etc)
But, if you want alignment, don’t let the connection get in the way and make sure you force the conversations to clarity.
Takeaways: 1) prioritize what the main objective of the offsite is and build agenda/structure around that, 2) A lot of upfront time investment in clarifying what is said to avoid miscommunications and assumptions will go a long way, especially after the offsite concludes.
