This article is intended to help you set up an iPad so students can access Amira via the ClassLink LaunchPad.

Test devices

Note: If you are a district leader, we recommend that your IT department test student devices. See the Amira Readiness Checklist. During this test session, we recommend you follow the content filter logging on the device being tested to ensure the combination of the LaunchPad app and HMH Ed are not triggering any content being flagged or denied by deep packet inspection that might need to be "always allowed" in addition to the domains listed in the Amira Tech Requirements.

For example, some districts have found that content filters blocking messaging, chat, or video conferencing traffic that make use of the mic input can get in the way of the program's performance.

Follow these 5 steps before you begin using Amira with students on an iPad through LaunchPad:

Step 1: Update the ClassLink Launchpad to the newest version

Ensure that the ClassLink LaunchPad is updated to the most recent version (Must be version 31.8.4 or later.)

2. Install Latest iOS Version

‍Amira performs best on an iPad with iOS 13 or higher. To install, make sure your device is plugged in and connected to the Internet. Then follow these steps:

Go to Settings > General > Software Update

Tap Download and Install

2. Clear History

  1. Select the Settings icon on the home screen

  2. Find Safari within the menu options along the left side of the screen

  3. Select Clear History and Website Data > Clear

3. Always Allow the Microphone

To avoid access issues, we encourage you to enable the Safari browser to Always Allow use of the microphone. Adjust the System Preferences to recognize your device’s internal microphone.

  1. Tap Settings on the iPad desktop

  2. Scroll down to Settings for Websites, and tap Microphone

  3. Choose Allow to allow the use of the microphone without permission every time you visit a website

4. Disable Pop-Up Blockers

Amira will open from HMH Ed in a new tab in Safari, so disabling Safari pop-up blocker is essential.

  1. Tap Settings

  2. Tap Safari

  3. Toggle Block Pop-ups to off.

5. Disable Auto-Lock

Amira Practice has infrequent prompts for students to interact with the screen. As a result, the iPad may "go to sleep" if the auto-lock settings are not adjusted. To adjust the auto-lock timing: from

  1. Go to Settings

  2. Find Display & Brightness in the left navigation bar

  3. Tap Auto-Lock

Choose Never

6. Turn Off Siri

To turn off Siri in Safari:

  1. Go to Settings

  2. Tap Safari

  3. Tap Siri & Search

4. Toggle all Siri options to off


Note: The Amira Student application is available on all platforms. Teachers should access their Amira teacher on Chromebooks, PC or Mac device. The teacher portal on iOS is not yet ready… but it’s going to be awesome! 👏

Teachers: ClassLink Launchpad will launch the Amira teacher portal from the HMH Ed product page on Chrome, Windows, or Apple OS platforms without the need to leave the Launchpad environment. See What are the Amira tech requirements?

Students: ClassLink Launchpad will launch Amira from the HMH Ed product page on Chrome, Windows, or Apple OS platforms without the need to leave the Launchpad environment. On iOS, the ClassLink Launchpad application will open Amira in a separate browser window (Safari) once the “Amira” button is tapped on the HMH Ed student page.
