Anara supports multiple AI models from different providers. Switching models is like choosing the right tool for the job β a fast model for quick questions, a more capable one for deep synthesis. You can switch at any point, including mid-conversation.
The model selector
The model selector is located next to the chat input at the bottom of any chat panel. Click it to open a dropdown showing the models available on your plan.
Auto mode
Auto is the default. In Auto mode, Anara picks the most appropriate model for your question. This is a good starting point if you are not sure which model to use.
Models by plan
The models you can access depend on your Anara plan. Higher-tier plans unlock more powerful models.

When to use which model
Not every question needs the most powerful model. Here is a rough guide:
Quick lookups and summaries: Faster models like Gemini Flash Lite work well and respond quickly.
Complex synthesis across many documents: More capable models like Claude Sonnet 4.6, GPT 5.4, or Gemini 3.1 Pro handle multi-document reasoning better.
High-stakes work requiring the strongest reasoning: Claude Opus 4.6 (Max plan) is the best choice for your hardest questions.
Changing models mid-conversation
You can switch models at any point during a conversation. The next message you send uses the newly selected model β previous messages are not affected. This is useful when you start with a fast model for quick questions and switch to a more powerful one for complex synthesis.
Separate defaults for chat and editor
You can set different default models for the AI chat and the note editor:
Go to Settings > Preferences.
Under Chat, choose your default model for conversations.
Under Editor, choose the model for AI help while writing notes.
These defaults apply when you start a new session. You can always override the model per conversation using the model selector in the chat input.
If something is not working
A model is not appearing in the selector. Some models require a Pro or Max plan. If a model you expect to see is not listed, check your current plan in Settings > Billing.
