Every response from Anara includes citations. Think of them like clickable footnotes: each one links directly to the exact passage in the source document where the information came from. You can verify any claim in one click.
Inline citations in chat responses
When the AI answers a question, numbered citations appear inline within the response text. A sentence might end with [1] or [2], indicating which source that claim draws from.
Click any citation number to see the source. If the document is in your library, Anara opens it and scrolls directly to the exact passage the AI referenced. If the citation is to an external source β such as a web page or paper from an academic database β it opens in your browser.
Why this matters: Anara is built for people who can't afford to make mistakes. Every claim is traceable to a primary source, so you're never just taking the AI's word for it.
Citation formats
Anara supports 12 citation formats: Numbered (default), APA 7th edition, MLA 9th edition, Harvard, Chicago, IEEE, CSE, ACS, Vancouver, ASA, AMA, and OSCOLA.
Numbered is the default and works well for reading and research. If you're writing for a specific field, switching to the right format (APA for social sciences, Vancouver for biomedicine, Chicago for humanities, etc.) produces properly formatted references.
Changing your citation format
Go to Settings > Preferences.
Find the Citation format setting.
Choose your preferred format from the dropdown.
Separate formats for chat and editor
Citation format is set independently for the AI chat and the note editor. This means you can use Numbered citations in chat for quick reference while using APA or Chicago in your notes for formal writing.
Both settings are in Settings > Preferences: one under Chat and one under Editor.
Adding citations to notes
When writing a note, use Search citation in the editor toolbar to search your library and insert a properly formatted reference. The format follows your Editor citation preference.
You can also ask the AI to create a citation using @Create citation in the chat input. See Using @mentions to control the AI for more on the @mention menu.
If something isn't working
The format isn't changing. Make sure you're editing the right preference. Chat and Editor each have their own citation format setting in Settings > Preferences.
