The results of Doly captures depend on how good the capture is.

A great capture leads to great results and the reverse is also true. Here are a few tips to become a master scanner

✅ Use a Proper Setup

For accurate 3D reconstruction, we need consistently high-quality photos.

The quality of your setup is critical. Here are a few setups that work used by our users :

Here's how to set yourself up for success:

  • Capture on a high support : an object on the ground will be hard to capture (except if it is big, like a piece of furniture)

  • Make sure you can move around the setup, especially for 360 captures

  • Avoid reflective surfaces ; that mirror table is beautiful but might not be ideal

🚫 No Green Screens, Please

While it might seem helpful, green screens don’t work well with our technology. Doly needs real, natural environments to accurately understand depth, lighting, and textures.

Why avoid them:

  • Green screens create a green spill effect, making your products look greenish

  • They confuse the 3D reconstruction process

  • You’ll often get glitches, holes, or warped results

Do this instead:

  • Capture your subject in a real environment with natural backgrounds

  • you may use a sheet of white paper below your object, especially if you want to generate shots on a white background

  • Focus on even lighting — not artificial isolation

⏱️ Don’t Rush the Capture

Slow and steady wins. It’s tempting to do a quick walkaround, but take your time — especially when capturing complex geometry like plants, furniture, or art.

You can stop at every square of capture and move slowly between them to avoid motion blur on your images.

📏 Get Close, But Not Too Close

Our tech can reconstruct great detail, but avoid extreme close-ups

Best practice:

  • Keep subjects well-framed within the circle of capture ; you can be even a bit closer, but avoid being too close or too far

💡 Light Matters — A Lot

Our tech relies on visual consistency.

Uneven lighting or deep shadows can create noise and reduce quality.

What to aim for:

  • Soft, even lighting across the whole scene

  • Natural daylight (not direct sunlight, a cloudy day is ideal) or diffuse artificial light works

  • Avoid spotlights, backlight (yes that window in the background!), and flickering sources

🛑 What to Avoid

  • No motion blur or shaky photos

  • No drastic lighting changes across the series

  • no moving the object, and no moving object (no pets please)

  • Don’t get too close — we need spatial context

  • Avoid cluttered or reflective backgrounds when possible

With just your iPhone and the right technique, Doly can turn your captures into rich, immersive 3D photos. Take your time, set the scene right, and let the magic happen.
