Doly enables you to scan your products in 3D in order to show them in 3D (we call this 3D photos) or to generate multiples visuals (photos or videos) from the scan.
The idea is that you only need to capture an object once : capture once, generate infinite visuals., whenever you need them.
Step 1 : get the iPhone app
Doly once works for iPhones superior to the iPhone 11 pro, because we are leveraging camera possibilities that don't exist on older models.
Sorry for Android users, we don't have an Android app yet.
The iPhone app can be downloaded here.
Step 2: pick your object wisely
First things first, choose a subject that will be both fun and practical for your early adventures.
As a beginner, start with something simple, like a sculpture, a toy, a shoe, or a small piece of decoration. Why? Well, complex subjects like shiny objects can be tough for Doly software to process.
We don't recommend oversized objects as well, the sweet spot is objects that could be placed in a carboard box, as we're an app about ecommerce.
Small objects like small jewelry are hard to capture on their own, they should be captured on a support.
By the way, your object should be static (we’re looking at you, pets)! It shouldn't move at all during capture, or the result will be all messed up.
Fun Tip: Start with something personal! Maybe your favorite mug or that action figure you've had since childhood. It’s a great way to stay motivated through the process!
Step 3 : Your setup
Your setup involves a few things, like the surface you're capturing, the lighting and the camera.
The setup (where your object stands)
It should be flat, and high! A table is usually a good way to start, but anything higher might even be better. Why so high? So you don't have to break your back to capture those nice packshot-friendly low angles.
We love to put carboards boxes on tables, as a setup for 180 capture
And for a 360 capture, make sure you can turn around the object.
Don't put your object far from the end of the table, or it will be harder to move around it.
Please don't capture your object on the floor, as it will be really hard for you to finish.
Here are a few examples of setups that work for these first captures:
The lighting
Doly software LOVES consistent, even lighting. Your iPhone needs to pick up all the details and textures of your object, and shadows or too much glare can ruin the party. The goal is to minimize harsh shadows or overexposed spots.
Avoid Direct Sunlight: It creates too many shadows and too much contrast.
Avoid backlight : especially when capturing in 180
Diffuse the Light: Use indirect light or position your object in the shade if you’re outdoors. Indoors, soft light from a window or a light source with a diffuser (a lampshade works!) is perfect.
Don't overthink it! Some environments like stores, warehouses, offices are usually great to capture without putting too much thought on it.
The environment
You don't need to capture in a professional studio. It is better though to make some room for you to move and around the object so that the cutouts are good.
Green screens are not necessary and are even counterproductive, as they tend to give "green spill" (ie green reflects) to the 3D scan.
Your iPhone
Always a good idea to clean your iPhone cameras with whatever clothes you have on or a microfiber cloth.
Step 4 : Capture
Now you can start the capture on the app!
Your first scan will be a quick 180, ie the simplest mode of scanning.
Once you finish it, you will unlock the Full 180 which provides better quality.
1 : the Dry run
This is a preliminary step to localize your product in space. Just move around it or do a full circle in 360 mode.
Move with your legs! A key principle of the Doly capture is that your legs are moving, not your arms. This will make the capture much more comfortable.
2 : The capture itself
This is the second step where your capture product from all angles needed.
You will need to move your body around the product to capture all angles.
Don't move the product!! It is really important that it stays in place.
Again, move with your body rather than move your hand in order to capture all the blocks.
3 : The Cutout itself
This step is about separating your product from its environment. Adjust the box around your product so it's separated from its surroundings.
This is a critical step ; ensure that the cutouts are consistent (ie that you include the object base in all captures for example). You won't be able to change it afterwards
4 : Change the name and upload
These steps are straightfoward : you can change the name of your product and you should upload it.
After upload, we'll compute your object on your powerful machines and will send you the results as soon as we have it.
Congratulations, you did your fist capture!
5 : Get the results
After 40 min, you will receive new photos, videos and a 3D photo on the app. We call these visuals "Dolies".
The first result might be a bit underwhelming, but don't stay there! You can now generate new visuals with our templates and it is much faster than the first iteration.
6 : Generate new visuals
Once you have your new Doly, press on the Button at the bottom right to generate new visuals from the same object.
You can now chose among our list of templates, photo or video.
You can now generate to new templates or move on to new types of captures.
If you want to embed the 3D photo, look at the 3D photo integration section.
We hope you'll have a great first experience with Doly!
