Synthace can automatically align your responses to your DOE design runs for export or processing in the response analysis app. To use these features you need to upload your data to Synthace. This document gives an overview of how to do this.
Note: Whilst this article covers data upload in the context of DOE, this process is universal across the platform and data can be associated with an execution from all types of workflow, DOE or otherwise.
Measurement Data In Synthace
Synthace models measurement data as a property of physical samples. Since samples live in plates, data files are associated with plates, and since measurements are only taken on real plates Synthace requires the plates to be in a simulation which has been executed, giving the option to associate measurement data with plates in the execution results page.
Associating data with plates
There are two ways data can become associated with a plate:
Automatically associating data with a plate
Manually associating data with a plate
Automatic association of data with plates is only possible if executing on a device with fully-integrated analytical devices where a robotic arm can facilitate the plate handover. In this case, data upload happens automatically without the need for user intervention.
Manual data upload supports several data sources:
Manual upload of a file from a supported device
Association of a file automatically uploaded by SynthaceHub with a plate
Manual upload of a generic data file
The difference between supported devices and generic upload is the format of the data. Generic data has a simple format which is detailed below.
How to Add Data Using Generic Data Upload
For devices which are not directly supported by Synthace the platform also supports an option to upload a generic format for data. See below for how these files are formatted.
Navigate to the execution page and locate the plate you want to associate data with. Click Add File.
A box titled FROM will appear. Click Computer.
A file requester will appear, select your file and click Open
You will then be shown a list of sources for the file, including supported known devices you have in your setup and a manual option (Another device). Click on Another device.
The data will then be automatically parsed and associated with the plate for downstream use in structuring or analysis.
Formatting Files for Generic Data Upload
The currently supported generic format simply indexes measurements in columns using well locations in A1-format to identify which sample the measurements in each row apply to.
The file should contain a header row to help identify measurements uploaded by name and include a single Location column containing well names. Files must be saved in .xlsx format.
The header label for your data columns, in the example here A280, will be the name used to reference this data as a measured response in the Analyse Response app later.
Location | A280 |
A1 | 410.7266 |
B1 | 360.1988 |
C1 | 379.2997 |
D1 | 358.4086 |
E1 | 386.6656 |
F1 | 355.2593 |
G1 | 362.2998 |
H1 | 361.3206 |

How to Add Data From a Supported Device Using a Local File
Where files come from supported devices the file format must be the standard Synthace format for that device. Many devices can produce more than one format so it’s important to ensure the data are exported in the compatible format (check with your Field Application Scientist if you’re not sure what this is).
Navigate to the execution page and locate the plate you want to associate data with. Click Add File.
A box titled FROM will appear. Click Computer.
You will then be shown a list of sources for the file, including supported known devices you have in your setup and a manual option. Click on the device type which generated the data.
A file requester will appear, select your file and click Open.
How to Add Data From A Supported Device Which Has Automatically Uploaded The File
If the device has a SynthaceHub file watcher associated then you can find the file already uploaded to Synthace using the File Browser
Click Add File on the relevant plate and select Device.
You will see a requester showing the available devices. Click on the device which was the source of the data.
A Synthace file browser window will appear. Device runs appear as folders indexed by date and time. Choose the relevant date and time for the run with the appropriate data.
You will see the files uploaded for the device, select the relevant file and click “SELECT”
The file will now be associated with the plate.
Well done for reaching the end of this tutorial.
