The "Allow Membership Per Customer" feature in the Appstle Memberships app provides merchants with precise control over how many memberships a customer can purchase. This feature includes four distinct behavioral settings to tailor membership access to your business requirements:
One Overall
One Active Overall
One Per Frequency
One Active Per Frequency
Below is a detailed explanation of each behavior and its use cases:
Setup Requirements
Before enabling this feature, ensure that the Membership Validation extension is turned on:
Navigate to Shop Settings in the app.
Toggle the Allow Membership Per Customer setting to "Enabled."
Confirm that the Membership Validation extension is active under the app’s extensions.
Once enabled, you can configure any of the four behaviors below.
1. One Overall
This setting ensures that a customer can only hold a single membership, regardless of its status or frequency.
Example: If a customer has any membership (active or canceled), they will be prevented from purchasing another.
Behavior:
If the customer attempts to purchase a membership, they will see a message: "Already a member, not possible to order."
Use Case: Ideal for businesses that want to restrict customers to a single membership for streamlined management.
2. One Active Overall
This setting allows customers to hold only one active membership at a time. Canceled memberships do not count against this rule.
Example:
A customer with multiple canceled memberships can purchase a new one.
However, if they have one active membership, they must cancel it before purchasing another.
Behavior:
If the customer has an active membership, they will be blocked from buying another until the current one is canceled.
Use Case: Suitable for businesses where customers can switch memberships after canceling their current plan.
3. One Per Frequency
This setting permits customers to hold one membership per frequency (e.g., monthly, annual, or weekly).
Example: A customer can have one active membership for the "Monthly" plan and cannot have one for the "Annual" plan or any other frequencies simultaneously, as it is a different frequency in the same plan.
Behavior: Customers will need to cancel an existing membership of a specific frequency to purchase another of the same type of offering with another frequency.
Trial Restriction: For memberships with trial restrictions, you can choose the "One Per Frequency" option to prevent customers from exploiting trial periods. If a customer cancels their membership and tries to purchase the same membership again, they won't be able to buy a new one. Instead, their old membership will need to be reactivated from your end, and in this case, the trial period will not apply.
Use Case:
Designed for businesses offering different membership types with different durations, allowing customers to hold a membership for only one frequency. It ensures better control over membership management and trial period usage.
4. One Active Per Frequency
This is a more flexible setting that allows customers to hold multiple memberships, provided they are of different frequencies.
Example:
A customer can purchase a "Monthly" membership while already holding an active "Weekly" membership.
However, they cannot purchase a second "Weekly" membership unless the current one is canceled.
Behavior:
Only one membership per frequency can be active at a time.
Use Case: Ideal for businesses offering distinct membership options where customers may benefit from multiple plans of varying durations.
Merchant Considerations
Ensure the Membership Validation extension is active for these settings to function correctly.
