If a customer’s payment method is failing and they cannot update their card through their standard payment wallet or gateway, there’s an effective workaround. By sending the customer a secure Quick Checkout Link for a $0 subscription, they can safely add a new payment method outside of their usual wallet system.
Once they’ve completed the process, either you or the customer can apply the new payment method to their existing subscription.
✅ Step 1: Create a “Free” Product in Shopify
If you don’t already have one, follow these steps:
Navigate to the Products section in Shopify and click “Add product.”
Name the product something clear, like “Update Payment Info” or “Secure Payment Method Collection.”
This name will appear during checkout, so make sure it’s customer-friendly.
Set the price to $0.00.
Mark the product as non-physical to prevent shipping charges.
🔁 Step 2: Create a One-Time Subscription Plan in Appstle
Open the Appstle Subscriptions app.
Go to Subscription Plans and click “Create New Plan.”
Choose the $0 product you just created.
Set the plan to expire after the first cycle (so it doesn’t auto-renew).
Add a visibility tag so this plan remains hidden from your storefront.
💡 This plan is only used to securely collect updated payment information — it won’t charge the customer.
🔗 Step 3: Generate a Quick Checkout Link
In Appstle, go to More > Quick Checkout.
Select the $0 product and one-time plan you created.
(Optional) Pre-fill the customer’s name and email for convenience.
Keep this Shop Pay toggle disabled:
Click Generate Link and share the link with your customer via email, chat, etc.
🔄 Step 4: Apply the New Payment Method to the Subscription
Once the customer completes the checkout and adds their updated payment details, you can update their existing subscription using one of the following methods:
From the Merchant Portal:
Go to Subscriptions, find the affected subscription.
Click the pencil/edit icon next to payment info.
Select the new payment method from the dropdown.
From the Customer Portal:
The customer logs in and clicks “See Details” on their subscription.
Go to Payment Details > Edit.
Choose “Select another payment method” and pick the new one.
The next renewal will now use the updated payment method.
