Manually Create a Membership

This article covers how to manually create a membership.

Updated this week

Memberships are typically created automatically when a customer purchases a product with a membership option in your store.

A membership can be manually created by navigating to Memberships > Create Membership in your Appstle dashboard. This allows you to create memberships on behalf of your customers.

IMPORTANT: In order for this method to work, customers MUST have payment options stored within Shopify.

1. Next Order Date and Billing Information

The Next Order and Billing Information fields allow you to define parameters for the membership plan you wish to provide your customer. Here you can set the next order date, next order time, billing frequency, and billing interval (days, weeks, months, years).

Clicking advanced options reveals the following additional fields:

  • Minimum number of orders: How many billing cycles a customer has to commit to their membership before they are able to cancel it or change anything within it.

  • Maximum number of orders: How many billing cycles need to pass before a membership is automatically canceled. This would be used if the membership you are creating is meant to go on for a set period of time, rather than indefinitely.

  • Plan name and description (Optional): Sets a name and description for the plan that will be displayed to the customers.

2. Currency

You can set the currency hat your store will apply to a membership plan. For a US-based store, USD should be selected.

3. Products

Clicking Add Products brings up the product menu. Search for your membership product and add it to the selected plan.

4. Customer Details

The Customer Details section allows you to search for customer information stored within your Shopify store. Clicking Choose Customer in the upper-right will allow you to search for a customer by name.

Both the customer ID and email ID fields should be automatically filled out after selecting a customer name.

Pay close attention to the Payment Method ID section. Clicking the drop down menu will show the different payment methods that are associated with the selected customer (based on their Shopify customer profile).

The customer MUST have a payment method(s) associated with their Shopify profile or the Payment Method ID field will not be populated.

Once all the fields have been set, select a status for the membership. The options are Active, Paused, and Cancelled. Once finished, click Save on the upper-right hand corner of the screen to create the membership.
