Generative Buildings

Generating buildings from unit sizes and mix

Written by Mike Buss

Generative buildings create units along a corridor based on unit sizes and a unit mix.

To create a generative building click on the arrow beside the building button in the toolbar to open the dropdown and select Generative Building. Note that generative buildings remain generative after creation - you can always make further edits after creating the building.

Generative building parameters

While creating or editing a generative building the building parameters are shown in the right sidebar. You can hover over any of the parameter names to see a tooltip explaining what the parameter does.

The Generative section at the top defines which area types are being generated along with their target size and mix. By default all area types that have been created for the selected Function are included in the mix. You can remove area types from the generative list by clicking the filter button in the top right corner and deselecting area types from the menu that appears.

When a generative building is selected but not being edited you can access the parameters by clicking the settings button in the top right corner of the Generative section

Edit mode

Edit mode provides a level of customization that goes beyond the building parameters. You can:

  • Add/edit entries

  • Add/edit cores

  • Edit building width per edge

  • Add end units

Add/edit entries

To add an entry, click the Entry button in the toolbar. Note that entries can only be placed on corridor edges.

Placed entries can be dragged along the corridor.

To delete an entry, select it in the scene and press Delete on your keyboard.

To edit an entry width, select it in the scene and edit the Width input in the right sidebar.

Add/edit cores

To add a core, click the Core button in the toolbar. Note that cores can only be placed on corridor edges.

Placed cores can be dragged along the corridor.

To delete a core, select it in the scene and press Delete on your keyboard.

To change a core type click on the button in the Type section of the right sidebar and select the new desired type from the menu that appears.

Note that generative buildings will always maintain the minimum number of cores required based on the parameters set, meaning you cannot delete cores in a way that would result in too few cores being created.

Building width per edge

By default every edge in a generative building will have equally sized unit depths on either side of the corridor. This can be overridden by selecting the edge and adjusting the Unit depth inputs in the right sidebar. Alternatively you can use the push/pull tool or select the corridor and drag the outer building edge to adjust the unit depths for that edge.

Edges can be restored to their default state by clicking the Clear overrides button in the right sidebar.

Add end units

By default every edge with at least one disconnected end in a generative building will have an extension of 0'. This means that the corridor extends through to the end of the building rather than having a unit at the end. This can be overridden by selecting the edge and adjusting the Extension input in the right sidebar. Alternatively you can use the push/pull tool or select the corridor and drag the outer building edge to adjust the extension for that edge.

Edges can be restored to their default state by clicking the Clear overrides button in the right sidebar.

Baking a generative building

There are many scenarios in which the generative building will need further edits that go beyond what is possible via parameters and the tools available in edit mode. Baking a building converts the building to a typical Arcol building - a bake building is no longer generative, but gains the benefits of full floor plan customization.

To bake a generative building, select the building and the click the Bake button in the right sidebar.
