Before breeding takes place, a Mare must be booked to a Stallion for service. Normally a Service Contract will be entered into by the owners of the mare and the person or organisation providing the Stallion Service. The owner of the Mare will agree to pay a fee either on the Mare becoming pregnant, or on birth of a live foal. The owner of the Mare will then normally own the Foal born resulting from the mating.

Therefore the first step to horse breeding in Ardex is to record Bookings of mares to stallions for service. This guide assumes you already know how to enter horses to your Ardex database (see Getting Started guide). Once the Stallion and Mare are entered (and ideally verified against the stud book database via the F5 function) go to Main > Bookings to record mares booked to a stallion for servicing.

Bookings Screen

Select a Stallion and all Mares booked to the stallion for the current season will display in the lower part of the screen. There are a number of data entry fields in the Bookings screen, but only the Mare name and booking Type are required fields to add a booking.

Bookings Screen Data Entry Fields

As soon as a Stallion is selected in the Booked To field a list of mares booked to that stallion for the season selected will display in the lower part of the screen. Any new bookings entered to the stallion will add to the bookings list displayed. Bookings may be sorted by any column by clicking the column header, for example owner name, agent name or mare name.

The list of mares booked to the selected stallion may be printed or exported to excel. Double clicking any booking allows for editing of booking details in the upper part of the bookings screen, including transfer of the mare booking to another stallion.

If you click the left of a row to highlight it, then press delete you will be asked to confirm that you wish to delete the stallion booking. You may click into the comments filed and enter comments relating to a booking if you wish.

Selecting Horses for Bookings

In order for a stallion to be available for bookings it needs to be set to horse Type: Stallion and preferably also be ticked as standing at stud. This can be done via Main > Horses in the horse information window.
