Creating a Mission Statement
What you'll learn
This guide will walk you through:
Mission Statements
Tip: Before creating your first goal in Goal Manager, we recommend that you start with creating a mission statement.
A mission statement is more than words—it’s your personal North Star. It defines your direction, aligns your actions with your values, and ensures every step you take moves you forward with purpose.
In this guide, you’ll create a mission statement that drives results and integrate it seamlessly into Goal Manager.
What is a mission statement?
Starting with your mission will clarify what you want to achieve and why you want to achieve your goals.

Definition:
A mission statement is a written declaration that:
Guides your decisions and keeps you on track.
Aligns your goals with your values.
Acts as a roadmap to where you want to be.
Why make a mission statement?
The most successful people and businesses have a clear mission statement. Whether you're a professional, managing a team, or leading a billion-dollar hedge fund, having a mission statement makes achieving the right goals easier.
Look at these missions for inspiration:
Oprah Winfrey
"To be a teacher. And to be known for inspiring my students to be more than they thought they could be."
Starbucks
“To inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.“
Your mission links your goals to your core values and clarifies your priorities. It keeps you on the right path even when it gets tough.
Use your Mission Statement to decide what actions to take next to always be moving toward your goals.

Add Roles
Roles are the different characters you play in each area of your life.
Your goals and actions as a parent differ from those you have as a friend or manager. Roles should align with your chosen values.
For instance, if you wanted to be an effective leader at your company, what values and traits would you need to embody to excel in that role?
Pick up to three roles that define you.
For our Health journey, we’ll choose Dreamer.
Add Values
Values drive everything you do. They're a critical part of your mission statement.
Think about the values you want to embody within each Area and add them.
To add values
Select up to three values from the menu
Enter values in the Add Custom Values field and click Add.
Note: Any custom values you enter are saved and easily accessible in the menu. in any mission statement you create in the future.
Some prompts to help you identify your values:
What am I passionate about?
What habits do I want to instill or eradicate from my life?
How do I want other people to describe me?
Who are my heroes, and what do I admire about them?
When were the happiest times of my life, how did I feel, and why?
We’ll pick Rest, Performance, and Balance for our values.
Add Principles
Principles are guidelines or standards of how you’ll act in a way that aligns with your values. Each should relate to a specific value.
By default, principles start with the phrase “I believe that…” to reinforce its link to a specific value.
Some prompts to help you think about your principles:
What non-negotiable beliefs do I stand by, regardless of events?
What mindset or belief do I need to have when I want to make a decision that is aligned with this value?
For our Health journey, we’ll use this principle:
I believe that…prioritizing a consistent bedtime ensures peak performance and productivity, aligning with the pursuit of excellence.
Add Code of Conduct
A Code of Conduct is a standard of behavior for consistently acting in alignment with your principles and values in any situation. You can think of codes of conduct as rules for actions, while principles can be thought of as rules for attitudes.
Combine your principles and values to create a code of conduct to make sure you're taking the right actions on your journey.
Some questions to think about:
What actions are acceptable?
What actions are unacceptable?
Our goal is to perform at our best, so our code of conduct for our Sleep journey is:
Establish a consistent bedtime routine to ensure a regular sleep schedule, aiming for 7-9 hours of sleep to support peak performance and productivity.
Add Purpose
Think of purpose as the fuel for your motivation. Purpose answers the why behind your goals.
Describe the purpose of each role you added in the first step of the mission statement.
Think about:
How each role will help you complete the mission of your life
Why is this role important?
Who will you impact?
For our Health journey, we want to be well-rested to perform at our best.
Achieving peak performance and productivity by maintaining a consistent bedtime routine, ensuring optimal mental and physical performance.
Add Vision
Your vision is how your ideal life looks after you’ve accomplished your mission. Think about what your life would be like if you embodied your mission statement. This step will help you visualize how your dream life will look.
Enter your vision statement in the text field, and feel free to use AI to get suggestions.
Your vision should be:
Inspiring.
Clear.
