This guide will help you understand how to create a mission statement in Goal Manager and add it to an area.
Before creating your first goal in Goal Manager, we recommend you first create a mission statement. A mission statement is a written declaration that guides your choices and actions. It also keeps your goals aligned with your values, which will help you stay on track.
Choose a domain
Domains are broad aspects of your life . Choose the domain in which you want to start your success journey.
Choose this domain if:
Personal
your focus is on wellbeing and cultivating a balanced and thriving life.
Example areas: Health, Relationships, Personal Finances
Professional
You want to advance in your career, get new skills, and grow your leadership capabilities.
Example areas: Leadership, Communication, Public Speaking
Business
You want to enhance your organization’s success
Talent Management, Sustainability, Innovation
For this tutorial, we’ll choose the Personal domain.
After choosing a Domain you’ll land on the journey dashboard. You can start a Journey, by clicking Start on a journey card that resonates with you. Let’s choose Health for this tutorial.
Now that you’ve selected a journey, you’re ready to start the goal-setting process.
Select areas and categories
The first step in Goal Manager is to select the most important areas and categories of your life.
Areas are the different overarching zones of your life, while categories are more specific subsets of an area. They serve as containers for goals you’ll add later in the process.
For Health, we can choose from default categories in the menu like Physical, Sleep and Wellbeing.
Feel free to choose up to 10 different areas and categories.
We’ll choose Sleep as our category.
Create a mission statement
The Mission Statement Generator is a tool that helps you create an effective mission statement step-by-step with the help of AI. You’ll get a written statement you can reference anytime you need to be reminded of your ultimate mission.
After you’ve chosen your areas and categories, you can add a mission statement to each area.
Open the mission statement generator
On the “Select Areas & Categories” screen, on the right, you’ll see a “summit” button on the right of each area and category.
Click the summit to open the mission statement generator and create a mission statement for that area and category.
Note: before moving on to create goals, we highly recommend you create a mission statement for each of your areas so you have a roadmap to align your goals to your mission.
Add Roles
Roles are the different characters you play in each area of your life. Your goals and actions as a parent probably differ from those as a friend or manager. The roles you choose should align with your values.
Let’s say you wanted to be an effective leader in your career, what values and traits would you need to embody to step into that role?
For our Health journey, we’ll choose Dreamer as our role.
Select up to three roles from the menu or enter your own roles.
Use AI to create your mission statement
On every step of the mission statement generator you can toggle AI generated suggestions. Click a suggestion to add it to a field. You can always regenerate suggestions until you see one that resonates.
Next, you’ll clarify the values driving you in your chosen area.
Add Values
Values are the most critical step in your mission statement because they drive everything you do. Think about the values you want to embody in each Area and add them to the field.
Here are some questions to help you identify your values:
What am I passionate about?
What habits do I want to instill or eradicate from my life?
How do I want other people to describe me?
Who are my heroes, and what do I admire about them?
When were the happiest times of my life, how did I feel, and why?
Select from the menu or enter your values in the Add Custom Values field.
Note: any custom values you enter are saved and accessible in the menu in any future mission statement.
Enter up to three values.
For our Health journey, we’ll enter Rest, Performance, and Balance.
Next, you’ll add principles.
Add Principles
Now, let’s add principles to connect our values to our actions.
Principles are guidelines or standards of how you’ll act in a way that aligns with your values. Each should relate to a specific value.
By default, principles begin with the phrase “I believe that…” to reinforce the connection to a specific value.
Some prompts to help you think about your principles:
What non-negotiable beliefs do you stand by, regardless of circumstances?
What mindset or belief do I need to embody when I want to make a judgment that is aligned with this value?
For our journey, we’ll use this principle.
I believe that…prioritizing a consistent bedtime ensures peak performance and productivity, aligning with the pursuit of excellence.
Add Code of Conduct
A Code of Conduct is a standard of behavior for consistently acting in alignment with your principles and values, in any situation.
Put your principles and values together to create a code of conduct for your journey.
Some questions to think about:
What actions are acceptable?
What actions are unacceptable?
We want to perform at our best, so our code of conduct is,
Establish a consistent bedtime routine to ensure a regular sleep schedule, aiming for 7-9 hours of sleep to support peak performance and productivity.
So far you’ve clarified the kind of person you want to be, the values driving your actions, and created a standard of behavior to keep you aligned with your values. Great work! You’re almost done.
Next, you’ll create a vision statement to visualize your dream life.
Vision
Your vision is how your ideal life looks when you’ve accomplished your mission. Enter your vision statement in the text field and feel free to use AI for suggestions.
Ultimately, your vision should be:
1) Inspiring
2) Clear
For our Health journey, our vision is,
Consistently achieving peak performance and productivity by maintaining a regular sleep schedule, ensuring optimal mental and physical health.
This will help you visualize what your life will be like if you follow your mission statement.
You’re almost done creating your mission statement.
Next, we’ll add a purpose to tie it all together.
Purpose
Think of purpose as the fuel for your motivation. Purpose answers the why behind your goals.
Describe the purpose of each role you added in the first step of the mission statement.
Think about:
How each role will help you complete the mission of your life
Why is this role important?
Who will you impact?
For our Health journey, we want to be well-rested so we can perform at our best.
Achieving peak performance and productivity by maintaining a consistent bedtime routine, ensuring optimal mental and physical performance.
Completing the Mission Statement
You’ve completed every step of the mission statement generator, now it’s time to review your mission statement. Well done.
You should see a mission statement like this.
Your mission statement will help guide your decisions, aligning them with your values. It puts together the key areas and roles you’ve identified, your values and codes of conduct into an actionable roadmap for setting and achieving goals.
You can go back to any step of the mission statement generator to make changes or edit the mission statement directly in the field.
Note: your changes are automatically saved.
When you’re satisfied with your mission statement, click close to go back to the areas and categories page.
