What Is EDI?

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) enables businesses to exchange standardized electronic documents directly between computer systems, reducing manual data entry and improving the speed and accuracy of information exchange.

In transportation and logistics, EDI connects shippers, brokers, carriers, and other trading partners to automate essential processes, including:

  • Receiving and responding to load tenders

  • Exchanging shipment status updates

  • Transmitting freight invoices

  • Processing electronic acknowledgments

AscendTMS integrates EDI into your transportation management workflow, allowing your team to manage EDI-connected shipments directly within AscendTMS.

Once your EDI connection is configured, tested, and certified, supported transactions can be exchanged electronically with your trading partner.

Supported EDI Transactions

AscendTMS supports common transportation EDI transactions, including:

EDI Transaction

How Does the EDI Setup Process Work?

AscendTMS manages the technical implementation of your EDI connection, including coordination with your trading partner and its EDI provider.

Step 1: Submit Your EDI Setup Request

Complete the Online EDI Setup & Authorization Form to begin your EDI implementation.

The online form collects the information needed to begin implementation, including:

  • Your company and contact information

  • Trading partner information

  • Requested EDI transactions

  • Estimated shipment volume

  • Trading partner technical specifications

  • Authorization for applicable EDI service fees

Step 2: Trading Partner Coordination

Our EDI team will coordinate with your trading partner or its EDI provider to establish the technical and operational requirements.

This includes reviewing available EDI implementation guides, mapping specifications, connectivity requirements, and certification procedures.

Step 3: EDI Configuration & Data Mapping

AscendTMS configures the connection and required data mappings to support the agreed EDI transactions.

Connectivity methods and technical configurations are determined by the trading partner's requirements and the approved integration design.

Step 4: Testing & Certification

Before production activation, the EDI connection undergoes testing to verify that the required transactions are exchanged and processed correctly.

Where required, final certification is coordinated with the trading partner.

Step 5: Production Activation & Training

Following successful testing and certification, your EDI connection is activated for production.

Your team can manage supported EDI workflows through the AscendTMS EDI console.

Training on the EDI console is included as part of the implementation process at no additional charge.

How Long Does EDI Implementation Take?

Typical implementation timeframe: 2–8 weeks.

Implementation timelines vary based on the trading partner's requirements, technical complexity, availability for testing, and certification procedures.

The most common delays involve coordination and scheduling with the trading partner or its EDI provider.

Our team will work with you and your trading partner throughout the implementation process.
