CSV export not working — Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting guide for when the CSV export button in Asklayer's Data page does not download a file or shows an error. Covers report generation steps and browser settings.

If clicking Export as CSV in Asklayer does not download a file or shows an error, follow the steps below to identify and fix the issue.

Quick checks

  • Have you clicked Generate report before trying to export?

  • Does the data table below the filters show any rows of data?

  • Is your browser set to allow file downloads from this site?

Step-by-step diagnosis

1. "No data to export" error appears

This message appears when you click Export as CSV before generating a report, or when no responses exist in the selected date range.

Fix:

  1. Go to Data in the left menu of the Asklayer dashboard.

  2. Select a survey from the dropdown.

  3. Set the date range and click Generate report.

  4. Wait for the data table to appear, then click Export as CSV.

Note: If the table is empty after generating a report, there are no responses in the selected period. Try expanding the date range.

2. The button is greyed out (disabled)

The Export as CSV button may appear disabled if the data table has not been populated yet. Generate a report first (see step 1 above).

3. The file does not download despite no error

The CSV file is generated in your browser using a data: URI link. Some browser settings or extensions can silently block this type of download.

Fix:

  1. Check your browser's download settings and make sure downloads from app.asklayer.io are allowed.

  2. Temporarily disable any ad blockers or download manager extensions, then try again.

  3. Try a different browser (Chrome or Firefox are recommended).

4. The file opens but characters are garbled

The exported CSV is encoded in UTF-8 with BOM, which is the recommended format for opening in Excel. If characters appear garbled:

  • In Excel: use Data → From Text/CSV and select UTF-8 encoding when importing.

  • In Google Sheets: the file should display correctly when opened directly.
