This article explains how to add files to a project in AskTuring.ai so you can chat with your documents. You'll learn multiple upload methods including direct upload, drag-and-drop, and cloud storage connections.
Prerequisites
You must have access to a project in AskTuring.ai
Your files must be in a supported format (see step 4 below)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Method 1: Using the Upload Button
Select your project from the project list to open it.
Locate the project menu on the left side of the screen. You'll see the project name at the top, with options to add files and view chats below it.
Click the "+ Files" button located just under your project name.
Review supported file types by clicking the information icon (ℹ️) in the top right corner of the upload menu. AskTuring.ai supports: PDF, DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX, RTF, TXT, MD, CSV, XLS, XLSX, JSON, HTML, EML, MSG, MBOX, JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIF, TIFF, and WEBP.
Choose your upload method from the dropdown menu:
Upload File – Select individual files from your computer
Upload Folder – Upload an entire folder at once
Connect Google Drive – Link and import files from Google Drive
Connect OneDrive – Link and import files from OneDrive
Connect Dropbox – Link and import files from Dropbox
Monitor upload progress at the bottom of the left project menu. Processing may take a few minutes depending on file size and complexity. Wait until processing completes before chatting with your files.
Method 2: Drag-and-Drop
Drag files directly into one of two locations:
Into the chat field (right side) – Files added here are temporary and only available for the current chat session
Into the project menu (left side) – Files added here are permanent and remain in the project until manually deleted
Start chatting by typing your question in the chat field and pressing send. You can now ask questions about your uploaded files.
Viewing Your Files
Click the "Files" button below the chat text field.
Review your file list to see which files are ephemeral (temporary, chat-only) and which are permanently stored in the project.
Tips and Notes
File size: Large files (over 50MB) may take longer to process. You'll see a progress indicator during upload.
Temporary vs. permanent: Files dragged into the chat field are only available for that conversation. To keep files permanently, use the "+ Files" button or drag them into the left project menu.
Processing time: Files must finish processing before you can chat with them. Wait for the upload progress indicator to complete.
Cloud storage: When connecting Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox, you'll be prompted to authorize AskTuring.ai to access your files.
