The most common way to track sales is to give individual creators a unique URL which they provide to their audience, who are potential customers for the brand.

Typically, the brand has added a "sales pixel" onto their order confirmation page that captures that a purchase has been made and the $ amount of the sale.

In this flow, the most important actions to track are:

  • Clicks: a customer clicks on a link and is taken to the brand's landing page

  • Conversions or purchases: a customer navigates through the brand's website and ultimately goes through checkout to purchase an item. The conversion is actually them loading the order confirmation page.

  • Sales amount: the tracked $ amount of the purchase

These actions are tracked this way:

  • Clicks: Every time the link is clicked on, presumably by the potential customer, a click is tracked. If you click on your link 10 times, it will track 10 clicks.

  • Conversions: When a customer clicks on a link, a browser cookie is added. This cookie stays in the customer's browser for 30 days to see if the customer ever loads the order confirmation page. If the customer does load it, we're confident they made a sale. We track that page load as a conversion, or representative of a sale.

  • Sales amount: When the conversion is made, the total sale amount is also tracked.

All of the information above is tracked in real-time for the brand, who typically pay commission off the conversion (ie: $25 per conversion) or off the sale amount (ie: 15% of every sale).

Unfortunately, browser cookie tracking is not 100% foolproof. It is commonly used because it's accessible and normally captures most purchases. However, the cookie can be lost if the following happen:

  • The customer clears their browser cookie, thus deleting it

  • The customer moves across browsers. For example, if they start the purchase in Google Chrome but finish in Safari.

  • The customer moves from mobile to web, or vice versa, from click to purchase.

  • The customer purchases after 30 days from their link click. The 30-day period is the cookie expiration date.
