How to apply an adhesive

Before starting

  • First time setting up? Go to Step 1 below.

  • Already have a sensor with adhesive on it? Read this first:

Do I need to replace it? Not necessarily, adhesives can be repositioned or reused for multiple shorter sessions.

Replace it if:

  • It hasn't been used in a day (may have gathered dust)

  • It's been worn for an extended period and no longer sticks well, or causes irritation

  • It was worn while wet or sweating

Step 0: Gather and setup your materials as below

Note: The applicator is in the compartment under the top lid of your charging case. Press down lightly on the front of the lid to reveal it. This compartment also stores your sensor between uses.

Bottom image: The top lid removed revealing the applicator in the compartment

Step 1: Peel the liner

Hold the adhesive by the tab with the circle pointing up. Peel off the white liner and discard it.

Step 2: Place on stencil

Place the adhesive on the stencil, sticky side up, matching the holes by size.

Step 3: Attach sensor to applicator

Place the sensor onto the black applicator so the connector attaches magnetically.

Step 4: Press to bond

Align the applicator with the stencil, matching the holes by size again. This keeps the adhesive centered on the sensor's electrodes. Press down firmly to attach the adhesive to the sensor.

Important: Misaligned adhesive can block skin contact and damage the sensor when removed. This can result in failed readings.

Step 5: Done

You now have a sensor ready to wear. Pictured below is the sensor with the adhesive attached.

How to apply your sensor

The goal is to center all 4 sensing pads behind your right ear, over the temporal bone, close to the back of your ear without touching it.

Tip: Run through these steps without an adhesive first to get comfortable with positioning before applying it to your skin.

Step 0: Gather and setup your materials as below

Left to right: Applicator and sensor with adhesive bonded

Step 1: Flip it over

Flip the sensor so the magnetic connector faces down.

Step 2: Peel the liner

Peel off the plastic liner by pulling the top tab off to expose the adhesive. There are two tabs: hold the bottom tab to keep it steady, then pull the top tab to remove the liner.

Step 3: Place on applicator

Place the sensor on the applicator.

Step 4: Pinch to hold

Pinch the applicator between thumb and forefinger so the sensor faces down.

Step 5: Clear your hair and prep your skin

Brush hair away from behind your ear to expose bare skin. Make sure the area is free of lotion, oil, or residue, wipe with alcohol or a damp towel to clean and improve adhesion. If your skin is very dry, lightly moisten the sensing pads with a cotton swab.

Step 6: Position and press

Hover the applicator + sensor over your right ear, pull straight back past the ear's edge, align the applicator's curve to the back of your ear, and press firmly. (Alt: place your thumb at the base of the bone behind your earlobe, rotate the applicator's top toward the back of your ear, then press.)

Step 7: Remove and pat down

Gently remove the applicator and firmly pat the sensor onto your head. If it comes off, try again and hold longer; if reusing an old adhesive, apply a new one.

Step 8: Grab your device

Remove your Atlas device from the charger.

Step 9: Attach the device

Hold the device with the arrow notch up, stack it on the sensor's O-ring, and twist gently until the magnet clicks and the notches lock.

Tips for wearing your device

  • Skin prep: Apply to clean skin; wipe with alcohol or a damp towel to improve adhesion and readings.

  • Dry skin: Lightly moisten the black sensor pad with a cotton swab if your skin is very dry.

  • Exercise: Apply at least 30 min before moderate/rigorous activity; avoid activities with head-contact risk.

  • Water: Don't submerge the Atlas device. The sensor can be worn but must dry fully before recording.

  • Wear: If you are wearing the device all day, alternate between two sensors to allow the black pads on the sensor to fully dry between uses.

How to remove an adhesive

Gently cleaning the skin with mild soap and water and a towel after use can help to remove any excess adhesive and reduce any potential skin irritation, especially after long periods wearing your Atlas. Make sure to let your skin dry before reapplying the device

Step 1: Seat the sensor

Seat the sensor (with used adhesive) on the applicator so it clicks in magnetically. This will help provide a stable surface for you to peel off the adhesive.

Step 2: Pinch and grip

Firmly pinch the applicator and sensor edge with one hand; grasp the white adhesive tab with the other.

Step 3: Peel it off

Slowly pull the tab to remove the adhesive. The sensor may bend. This is normal. Avoid scratching the 4 black sensing pads.

Step 4: Store or replace

Store the sensor or apply a new adhesive. Sensors last up to 2 weeks of use if the pads aren't damaged. If the pull tab comes off from the adhesive, you can carefully pinch the loose end of the adhesive, and slowly continue pulling it away from the sensor.

Step 5: Discard the adhesive

Once removed, an adhesive can't be reused. Please throw it away.

Troubleshooting

Sensor peels early

  • Skin may be oily - clean the area, allow the skin to dry, and reapply.

  • Apply pressure onto the skin for longer, allowing the adhesive to stick

Device is attached all the time, but gaps are now appearing in my data

  • If wearing the device all day, consider switching between two sensors to allow the black pads on the sensor to fully dry between uses

Adhesive won’t center

  • Use the applicator for steadier alignment.

Adhesive is stuck to the sensor or ripped

  • Once sensor is removed from skin, place the sensor back onto the black applicator to stabilize during adhesive removal

  • Carefully try to peel up an edge of the adhesive to continue slowly peeling the adhesive

  • Apply isopropyl alcohol (70%) using a q-tip to help detach the adhesive from the sensor

When to contact support

  • Adhesives fail repeatedly

  • Sensor or adhesive causes skin irritation

  • You run out of adhesives unexpectedly
