Trend Analysis allows you to quickly graph consumption or interval demand for a building.

👍 This article will help you:

  • Graph interval data against historic trends and external variables

  • Identify opportunities to optimize building resource consumption

To access Trend Analysis, go to Apps in the side menu at left, then Trend Analysis.

Overview

In the Trends graph, you can configure:

Field

Instructions

Building

Select a building.

Point

Select the data point you wish to graph.

Period

Select the time period. Choose from standard calendar views, rolling views, or a custom period.

Overlay (optional)

Select an optional graph overlay, such as previous period, outdoor temperature, baseline, or HDD/CDD.

Above: Graph of electricity consumption over the last 7 days compared to the previous 7 days.

Below the graph, several statistics are displayed in one of three types of tables. Each table is automatically selected depending on the graph configuration:

  • General statistics (default) displays consumption, cost, and demand data.

  • Utility Rate & Tariff Engine statistics displays general statistics, plus demand cost data.

  • Baseline statistics displays general statistics, plus baseline data.

Above: General statistics for a graph of electricity consumption over the last 7 days compared to the previous 7 days.

📘 Notes on the Trend Analysis app

  • At periods of 7 days or less, data will be plotted at 1-, 5-, or 15-minute intervals, depending on the granularity of the data that the selected point is sending to Atrius.

  • At periods above 7 days in length, the graph automatically changes from line (demand) to bars (consumption/production).

  • HDD, CDD, and Baseline overlays only render for periods of 7 days or more.

  • Points with a Point scope of 'Other' do not render in Trend Analysis app.

  • Table statistics for a bill point will not display the actual cost of the utility bill. Instead, it will display the consumption value on your utility bill and apply the Utility Prices rate or default blended rate to the consumption value.

Best practices & ways to use

Analyze data quality and point uptime: Look for missing point data or periods of time when there was an offline event.

Identify anomalies: Compare current use to a previous period to identify anomalies and potential inefficiencies. If you see a spike or dramatic decrease in consumption compared to what is expected or what has happened in the past, this could serve as a red flag.

Compare year-over-year changes in consumption: Select a facility, select a point, then look at the last 12 months compared to the previous period.

Determine when a demand peak was hit: Peak demand charges on your electricity bill could be as much as 40% of your total spend. Many utility bills will not tell you the time and date this peak demand was hit, nor will they help you understand the trends and factors that caused this excessive demand. Find "Peak demand" in the table below the graph.

Understand how external factors influence resource use: Weather and occupancy are two external variables that will influence building resource use. Use the "compared to" dropdown menu to overlay a weather normalized baseline, CDD, HDD, or outdoor temperature.

Troubleshooting

Problem

Solution

I see gaps in my data.

This may be due to a problem with the meter or device. For a manual point, there may be a gap in uploaded values. Please check your recent offline notifications or upload historical values using Batch Point Data Upload.

Some of the data values look suspiciously high.

You can manually remove any unexpected spikes by editing the data in Data Manager or by applying a spike threshold, which automatically filters out abnormally high values.

The summary of my data in the table below the graph looks suspiciously low.

This is likely due to missing data or an incorrect Pulse multiplier. If you are looking at monthly or daily data, the first part of the day or month may not have data if the point was connected during the middle of the day or month.

I do not see one of my points in the dropdown menu.

Check the point scope on the point's Profile tab. Points with a Point scope of 'Other' do not render in Trend Analysis app.
