Do I need to do anything to meet new accessibility standards if I sell books in the EU?

Updated over 5 months ago

Yes. As a publisher or author, you’re responsible for ensuring your EPUBs meet accessibility standards. This includes:

  • Adding alt text to meaningful images

  • Using clear headings and logical navigation

  • Avoiding fixed layouts or excessive styling

  • Ensuring hyperlink text is descriptive—this includes adding alt text to ALL images used as hyperlinks

  • Keeping text reflowable and resizable

If your eBook doesn’t meet these standards, retailers may ask you to declare it as “Not Accessible.” PDF books are automatically categorized as not accessible.
