What do widows and orphans and balanced page mean?

Updated over 4 months ago

A widow or orphan is a lone word or line of text that dangles at the beginning or end of a page. Widows and orphans can cause chunks of white space in the text and disrupt the flow of reading. Selecting Widows & Orphans under your Layout Priorities in your Theme will tell Atticus that you would like to prioritize preventing as many widows and orphans as possible.

Page balance focuses on making sure there are an equal number of lines on facing pages. Balanced pages can create a more pleasing visual aesthetic. Selecting Balanced Pages under your Layout Priorities in your Theme will tell Atticus that you would like to prioritize ensuring that facing pages will have an equal number of lines.
