Why is there a white background added to the images in my ePub?

That's actually a limitation on most reading devices themselves. This comes straight from KDP: 'Kindle devices and reading applications do not support TIFF, multi-frame GIFs, or images with transparent areas. When images are provided with transparent backgrounds, we convert the transparent background to white.’
