Though Atticus is not specifically designed for low-content books like workbooks or journals, it is absolutely possible to create them with a few different tips and tricks! Below are some tips for common items that you might be using in your book. These will help give you more control over how to edit your theme for your non-fiction work.
Using Image Templates for Workbook Pages
The easiest way to create consistent workbook-style pages in Atticus is to design your page layout in an external tool (like Canva), import it as an image, and then turn it into a reusable template:
Design your workbook page (with lines, boxes, or any layout you need) in a tool like Canva and export it as a JPG or PNG.
In Atticus, import the image into your book as a Full Page Image. • Once the layout looks right, save it as a template.
Use that template to add new pages - each new "chapter" in Atticus will use your saved layout.
Repeat for as many pages as your workbook needs, and create different templates for different page types if needed.
Citations & References
For non-fiction books that include citations, Atticus provides two main options:
Footnotes & Endnotes - allow you to provide additional information or citations without cluttering the main text.
Hanging Indent - lets you format bibliographies and reference lists where the first line of each entry is flush left and subsequent lines are indented.
Justification
Justification settings in Atticus are universal and cannot be adjusted on a chapter-by-chapter or page-by-page basis. Fully justified text in references is the most common industry standard.
Shortened URLs - All major style guides accommodate shortened URLs. This keeps your reference list cleaner and more accessible.
Line Breaks (PDF only) - Use Soft Returns (Shift+Enter) to control where a URL breaks across lines, without adding hyphens that could corrupt the link. Note: Soft returns cannot be used within Footnotes or Endnotes, and this method only applies to the PDF version - using line breaks in an ePub URL may break the link and make it inaccessible.
