How to account for gels, creams, or ointment in Controlled Drug Count

Note: This workflow may not be supported in all communities. Always check and follow your community’s policy and procedures before using this workflow.

Recommended Workflow if Counting per Tube:

  • Do not enter a quantity when receiving the inventory.

    • This avoids automatic per-dose deductions that can quickly create negative counts.

  • During End of Shift, staff will see the “Inventory Required” tag.

    • Instruct them to bypass this item.

  • Optionally, communities can maintain a paper log:

    • Example: “1 tube of ABHR for Marilyn”

Recommended Workflow if Counting per Syringe:

  • Change the QTY within the medication order to 1 Syringe
