Best Practices: Excel Number Separator Formatting (Mac + Windows)

Updated over 2 years ago

If you're working with clients overseas who use a different number separator than you're used to, it could cause issues when you import Excel documents into Backbone.

For example: In the United States the character for a comma (,) is used to separate thousands and a period (.) for decimal points - 1,000.01

Whereas in some European countries the character for a period (.) to separate thousands and a comma (,) for decimal points - 1.000,01

In order to quickly remedy this problem rather than changing your format by hand we suggest changing the settings within Excel. The process will be slightly different depending on which Operating System you work in.

For Windows:

  1. Click File > Options.

  2. On the Advanced tab, under Editing options, clear the Use system separators check box.

  3. Type new separators in the Decimal separator and Thousands separator boxes.

For Mac:

  1. Close Excel

  2. Click on the Apple Icon at the top left > System Preferences

  3. On the System Preferences tab, click Language & Region > Advanced

  4. In the General tab, type new separators in the Number Separators and Currency boxes for both Grouping (Thousands separator) and Decimal. Click OK.

Note: Changing this setting on a Mac will change how ALL numbers are displayed on your computer. Doing this on Windows only changes the format of number separators within Excel.
