Social History: Tobacco Use
In this article, you will learn how to document a patient's tobacco use in the Social History section of an exam in Barti.
Open Social History in an Exam
Open or create an exam for the patient.
In the exam, navigate to the History section.
Locate the Social History component.
Document Tobacco Use
Under Tobacco Use in Last 30 Days, select Yes or No.
Select a Tobacco Status from the dropdown:
Current Every Day
Current Some Days
Former
Never
Unknown
Enter Additional Details (Current Users)
If the patient currently uses tobacco (Current Every Day or Current Some Days):
Under Tobacco Types Used, select all that apply:
Cigarettes
Cigars
Pipe
Smokeless
E-Cigarettes/Vaping
Select Tobacco Readiness to Quit:
Not Interested
Yes, but not in the next month
Yes, within the next month
Select Tobacco Cessation Intervention Provided?:
Brief Advice to Quit
Referral to Quitline (1-800-QUIT-NOW)
Referral to PCP
Enter Quit Date (Former Users)
If the patient's status is Former:
Enter the Tobacco Quit Date using the date field.
Review in Finalized Exam
After the exam is signed, tobacco use data appears in the Social History section of the finalized exam view.
Only fields with recorded values are displayed.
If no tobacco or social history data was recorded, the section displays "No Data."
❗ Important Note: If you select No, the tobacco type fields will not appear. Only the Tobacco Status field is required to save.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are tobacco fields required to complete the exam?
No. All tobacco fields are optional. You can complete and sign the exam without entering tobacco data.
Can I go back and edit tobacco data after signing?
Tobacco data can be edited while the exam is open. Once the exam is signed, it follows standard exam amendment rules.
Does tobacco use data carry over to future exams?
No. Tobacco data is entered fresh for each exam. Use the Social History section each visit to keep records current.
